Just to quote one example - normally around this time of year, the BBC would be covering the International Open bowls at the Preston Guild Hall, or wherever the event happened to be taking place.

It must be pointed out that there's been less sport on BBC1 on Saturday afternoons in recent weeks then there would have been, but that's partly due to the fact they now cover one less snooker tournament than they used to because that's been abandoned, the World Masters Darts they used to show is now on ESPN and, most obviously, there hasn't been any rugby internationals because of the World Cup.

Just to clarify though about the snooker - similarly to the bowls, the Grand Prix/World Open event was only abandoned because the BBC chose to stop broadcasting it.

And in terms of rugby, the autumn internationals are held in November and not October, so that hasn't had any impact on the last few weeks. However, in years gone by, the BBC would have had the Anglo-Welsh Cup rugby during October, which continues during the World Cup anyway.

Another regular on BBC1 Sunday afternoons since 1985 has been the omnibus repeat of EastEnders.

When it started EastEnders was two 30-minute episodes per week (Tuesday and Thursday evening), so the Sunday omnibus was one hour.

Several years ago EastEnders was increased to three episodes per week, resulting in a 90-minute Sunday omnibus.

If like me you hate EastEnders you may see the Sunday omnibus as a waste of space. However bear in mind, what else would they put in its place? I guess the EastEnders omnibus is a cheap and easy way to fill up 90 minutes of Sunday afternoon (better than showing test card F or Pages from Ceefax for 90 minutes).

Let's just hope it never goes to four episodes a week then! Wink

It's been on a Saturday for a couple of occasions this year. It often gets moved to BBC 2 also.

Actually if you'd been paying attention before writing that, then you wouldn't look so much of a fool.
