Out of interest, do any bumpers (or interclips, whatever they're called) exist to go with the dancers? I find it a little odd that they only seem to use them at Christmas now.

Yes, there were some animations delivered but on most, the audio was so badly chopped out of the original ident that they were unusable.

However, if you watch BBC ONE NI then you'll see them make an occasional appearance with the audio repaired/re-edited. They're not used often though.

Fuzzy memory suggests there were 48 in the original set, but whatever the number, all of them were used.

I think one or two were never shown on Network, or at least not officially. They were the ones with 4 or 5 very quick cuts at the top.

And even if they were all shown, I'm sure there were some that were used once or twice and then never seen again?

There were 47 in the original set and I definitely saw every single one of them at least once on network BBC1. But this one in particular:

I only ever saw once (introducing Children in Need 1997) and then never again - and it was the only one I never managed to make a recording of. Then these three:

were fairly common in the early days of the balloons, before disappearing for a long period of time and then making a reappearance before being withdrawn officially in May 2000! (All images from The TV Room).

I could swear that the network used a Tapdogs interclip occasionally during the early days of the dancers... could anyone confirm this?

Oh those balloons are fantastic. Bright, colourful and a pleasure to watch.

What the hell is it with these horrible dancer idents which are badly filmed on what looks like to be a camcorder from Currys.

The balloons were filmed in 35mm and also cleaned up during editing to stop the colours of the balloon merging with the blues and greens of the landscape.

Plus there's the music issue. Balloon had a brilliant soundtrack. This new stuff sounds dodgy to say the least.

Are you saying that the dancer idents are not shot on 35mm?

Or they just wanted to play more trails...

Yes Simon, you're right and I'm lying.

I never mistrust your input Mark - seriously! But look at any junction and you can't help thinking there's a prize up for grabs for most number of trails ran Laughing

Yup - that's one of the original set that were not supposed to be used at first and were never officially approved. It contained something like 6 cuts within the first 5 seconds and it was thought that it would confuse the viewer as to what it was. Remember this particular network identity had replaced a relatively slow, mute, spinning globe (remember them?!) At first, they opted for the single shot, gentle baloons because they though it would be an easier transition for the viewing public.

There were 48 original balloon sequences. I knew that number was in my head for some reason.

47 symbols plus the National Anthem.

Ahh - the National Anthem! A kind of "Best of Baloons" sequence edited to the music. Very nice it was too. There's a full closedown including this sequence on The TV Room - you should be able to click here to see it.
