About the BBC One idents

And how appalling they are (February 2004)

Am I the only one who thinks the Beeb is trying to make a parody of the opening scene in Billy elliott ? More ident are popping up (quite literally) featuring people ascending and descending looking stoned. The new "Maasia" one and the festival are a classic example of this.

IMHO the BBC has really lost the plot this time. Perhaps when they next decide to change their idents they should allow suggestions from us, the people who fund them and watch the ridiculous idents. A competition would surely be the way to go, anyone agree?

If you really want to blame someone, blame Andy Margetson who was the bloke who directed them!

Does anyone actually have a favourite? they are all pointless unimaginative twaddle. It is like someone said, "Quick lets pop the balloon and put some irritating dancers on instead." The balloon was good at first, but it did seem a bit tired towards the end. Something new and different is required to ensure longevity. I blame the person who let that Andy bloke direct them. Then I blame the person who decided they were good. Then I blame the person who let them go on air. Basically I blame Lorraine(Let's bring back the Two Ronnies cos I have run out of ideas for more crap comedy commissions) Heggessey!

True. But the BBC management were dumb enough to commission them.

Anyway, I didn't start this thread to start blaming and flaming people, that'll get us nowhere. But perhaps suggesting ideas that could be put forward to the BBC?

For the record, my two favourite current idents are Skateboards and Ballet, mainly because of the music that accompanies them. The skateboards music is not unlike the music that accompanied the balloon. And also the latter is never shown anymore! I read in another thread on this forum that the reason was due to it being too "sombre". What??? Is this another of the BBC's excuses for axeing anything half decent?

I actually quite like the BBC ONE idents. It's nice to have something that actually has something to look at - a dance, or some rhythm - not some balloon that happens to be flying over a ruined church or a field.
I'm not saying the balloon was bad, but the fact that it was just quite boring, whereas the current set you can actually watch something.

I think it's a bad thing when an ident makes you sit up and watch it. Older idents had very short jingles and pleasing animations, which entered most peoples heads in a very subconcious way. You may have sat there and studied them now and again, wondering how they were animated or whatever, but they generally faded into the background and you didn't notice them anymore, except where it matters, in your subconcious.

Live action idents with music rolling on and on behind the announcements, make you watch them, and you notice them more. That could be a good thing, but IMHO, it is a very bad thing. The reason I hate the dancers is that because you notice them every time, you get sick of seeing them. For this reason, only one or two in the set are watchable after the first couple of days of use, and for not much longer after that. I've had to train myself not to notice the idents, and just ignore them, conciously. My Mum has been known to scream at the idents, saying, "Oh for f***s sake, when are we going to see something else?" That was only 6 months after they were introduced.

The balloon was depressing, but it was more subtle than the dancers, and less irritating because of it.

I like many of the new idents as they seem to be better than some of the original idents. I prefer the idents that are 'out of the studio' such as the Scottish lake set and the African ident. They have improved from the first batch.

I don't really like any of them any more but the best one out the lot for me is the Skateboarding one.

Have to agree too myself, it's used a lot here into the National News and regional programming along with the Capoeria ident, and most recently the Tai-chi ident, though from reading another related thread along similar lines, the rotation version of the tai-chi ident has apparently been dropped.

One ident I have not seen used on a regional basis recently is Acrobats (which I remember was pulled for a length of time last year as a mark of respect to a friend of one of the performers on that ident). But I think that the Cambridge sub-opt has used it into the 10 o'clock news.

BBC North West always used to use Acrobats into every regional programme, until Skateboarders and Tai Chi appeared. It is still used by Manchester, in fact I think it was used today into the One O'Clock News.

I'm not that keen on the idents visually, but the soundtracks are OK on some of them - Bollywood, Skateboarders and Salsa to name a few.

My understanding, and I stand to be corrected, is that it's not used any more because it was the ident they used prior to announcing the death of the Queen Mother. The clip's here (thanks to TV Ark). Now it's used only for serious or solemn occasions.
