I have just seen the Market ident on BBC One, and was wondering whether that market is in a real town, are those real poeple (not actors), and is the balloon actually there, becuase it looks like it has been inserted using computers.
And I have also heard that the balloons are to be scrapped this autumn, so what are they going to be replaced with - anyone know?

All except the original 8 or so are CG balloons. IIRC it costs to much to put it there for real.
I don't know if they *are* going to be replaced - there was a suggestion.

Of course they are going to be replaced the only thing good about them is the music, they have no relavance to the channel, they are slow and sleepy, and why does BBC 1 need to have a world map theme on their idents, its not as if people around the world can watch BBC 1!
Bring back the old '1', and scrap the balloons, but keep the music, or jazz it up a bit!
The market is real. The people are actors. The birds are real but are composited over the rest of the shot. The balloon is real but is also composited. As fas as I know
all
the balloons are real but in the case of some of the locations (Edinburgh city centre for example is a no-fly zone) they are composited shots. I dont think any of the balloons are computer generated as such.
I had mixed feelings about the balloon. I returned from the States in 1997 to find them in place and was shocked, but they have grown on me, in a very big way. I love seeing various parts of the nation. The globe (BBC) covering the nation is what it is supposed to represent, and does it extremely well.
The globe is as traditional as the BBC, and rightly so. I'd bet a dollar to a dime that any future idents for BBC1 include a globe image. I expect Lambie Nairn are already working on it.

REALLY??? I only knew of 4 that were! (3 from a website,1 while watching the olympic ident:That balloon looked soooo fake! <brain talking>Of course it was,why would they take it to Sydney?</brain talking>
I remember watching something about the Olympic ident, and I remember the bloke saying that they were actually planning to film the balloon over the Opera House. But it wasn't the cost they were worried about - it was the fact they couldn't fly it over that location because Sydney wouln't let them do it.

Not true. As has been said Sydney was CG but the balloon took to the skies 3 times to do location filming around the UK. There was a fantastic link that the BBC provided with further info on the shoots. It was mentioned in a previous thread but I forget where. Worth a look if you find it.
Do BBC ONE Wales always show their idents in 14:9 widescreen an analogue. Here in England we get 4:3 versions all the time apart from when the regional news is on and the odd News 24 switchover.
the idents are all widescreen in Scotland. I set my onDigital to always view in widescreen anyway but you can tell if its a cropped 4:3 or genuine.

It varies, sometimes they do show them in widescreen, but most of the time in normal.

I say - SAVE THE BALLOON!!
Virtually all, if not all, of the original 47 idents are genuine (I always thought the one going up the side of Mount Snowdon looked slightly un-real). There was a feature in the Radio Times last December about them, which describes the bother they had when filming at Eilean Donan castle when they had to make a mountainside crash landing.
The idents are shown in 16:9 on digital when the programme following it is 16:9. If the programme is in 4:3 then the ident is shown in 4:3, in order to hide the switch from 16:9 to 4:3 under a black screen.

I disagree. I think the BBC ONE Idents do have relevance to the channel. The globe is (to me) a symbol of BBC ONE. It is flying round important places or places of special beauty across the United Kingdom, like BBC ONE broadcasts around the UK.
Thats my interpretation - you can have your own opinions if you like.
