Clearly you know more about this than I do, but why would it not be possible to provide everything except BBC London programming? ITV manage it.

It was done for a while - on network BBC1 and on all digital sevrices there used to be a programme called UK Today which was a compilation of regional news from across the UK. This was invented to give digital viewers a news programe when before there were opt outs.

It would be possible to do something like that again, but there would be little point. They couldn't justify the cost of a programme that no-one watches except on the odd occasion when a local programme fails. And what's the use of a holding slide when a regional programme, (no matter how irrelevant) is far more useful, interesting and entertaining.

Most of the timing errors are usually in the region of a second or two. In a case like this, a clean feed could hold the end of a trail on screen (or whatever immediately precedes the regional opt) for an extra few seconds allowing a smooth transition no matter when London opts in.

The trail before is held onto for a while to enable a clean opt - there's plenty of time.

Exactly. The English Regions know, by looking at Presfax, which trail they should Opt Out after. Network add an extra second on to that trail to give the chance of a clean Opt. They also give a count to the Opt over talkback and shout "Opt Out, Opt Out". I would have thought that would leave plenty of time to cut from network on the regional desks to their local symbols.

For years the Nations managed to manually opt in and out of a dirty network feed several times in each junction without the luxury of an extra second of hold on every trail. Granted, some announcers / directors were better than others, but on the whole the results were not too bad considering they were having to speak on-air at the same time.

However I will say this in the favour of the vision mixers/directors in the English Regions... some of problems may be down to dodgy equipment. I'm not totally up to speed on how they work things... but I think some English Regions performs a soft-opt (i.e. Opt Out with network on the desk and then cut from network to local symbol on instruction from the Network Director). That being the case, then any problems are down to slow reactions from the people involved. However, I think in some regions the opt is triggered by a GPI which itself is triggered by the vision mixer cutting from network to another source. In this case a slow opt may be caused by something going wrong techically with the GPI (or perhaps by slow human reactions).

Opt-ins are particularly bad as well, especially after the Lunchtime News when network normally runs with a next slide straight after the opt. Normally goes something like "xt on BBC1 it's Neighbours"

To add to the mess Leeds jumps half a second when they do the secondary opt back in, meaning it goes "xt on BBC1 its N-bours"

This is my first time writing on the Forum... The Network Directors are suposed to get the regions in and out clean as possible, with a hold on the trail before the opt and the words "opt out, opt out, CUT"...obviously cutting to LDN news ident on the word cut. I can only assume that there are some new directors in Presentation, because a lot of times recently they have just said "and go" whilst cutting to LDN. The nations and regions do not get any hope of opting out before getting a glimps of the LDN ident !

Of course, you could always use common sense in conjunction with the network or news director's talkback...

Trails end in a pretty standard way. As does the news.

Yes I was thinking the same thing. MPH tell us which BBC region you're in so we can monitor your performance Smile

Has anyone ever opted out early, from London ?

I assume it's possible !

It's possible, in fact it's possible to press the button at any time.

Great way to hand your notice in!

Hands up any nation or region that hasn't put BBC ONE out on BBC TWO or vice versa at some point in the past?

Mind you Network have been known to run BBC ONE symbols on BBC TWO of course, or put BBC TWO on BBC FOUR.

Fair enough, the opt junctions are usually fairly much a standard every opt, and yes it has been know that regions have opted out early ! And it can't be denied that that BBC 1+ 2 idents have ended up on the wrong channel !! Embarassed
By the way Dan I think I used to work with you ! And NickyS too !! small World !

They just had a still Capoira into Eastenders.

Was this intentional?

Not intentional, four minutes into EastEnders, they paused for like 30 seconds with the message that there was a technical fault, so I assume this is why the ident was still.
