Surely it's time for the BBC to provide a clean feed to the regions so we stop getting a flash of BBC London at every other network junction. I doubt it would be that difficult or expensive to provide, and it'd solve an age-old problem.

If the opts are still handled manually then surely we'd end up seeing VT clocks and black screens instead of the London feed?

Most of the timing errors are usually in the region of a second or two. In a case like this, a clean feed could hold the end of a trail on screen (or whatever immediately precedes the regional opt) for an extra few seconds allowing a smooth transition no matter when London opts in.

It'd just allow regions a little more leeway, so timing doesn't have to be split-second. Clearly if someone completely nods off and fogets to opt in it's not going to look too hot, but then it never is. The clean feed could also contain a breakdown caption during regional windows so if a region does have a problem, viewers will get some kind of explanation rather than an irrelevant alternative programme which they almost certainly wouldn't watch anyway.

I noticed they were having a few problems last night. The ECP on Neighbours was shakey as usual. The ducker didn't dip the sound of the credits, so the ECP dialogue could barely be heard over the Neighbours theme, which is a good thing really! Laughing

It WOULD be expensive, as it would have to be supplied in addition to the feed that is already there, which is the network feed sent on out to the transmitters.

But would this not just replace that feed? London could then 'opt in' in the same way as the other regions do. I know this may not be technically possible at the moment, but I can't believe it'd be rocket science to set up - essentially London becomes another region, rather than the network feed.

Also, what would it be "clean" of? It'd still need to have the network promotions on it. And the programme. So really you're asking for a feed of network minus the symbols and opts. Such a thing does not exist, nor would it be easy to create.

Clearly you know more about this than I do, but why would it not be possible to provide everything except BBC London programming? ITV manage it.

EDIT: and before anyone says anything, I know ITV doesn't broadcast BBC London!

ITV od not manage it anymore and when they did each regional station had their own continuity. London goes out to the transmitters all over England, it's a totally different setup

So we're talking about re-engineering how the entire network structure works because some people in the regions can't press buttons quickly enough?!

I personally don't see what the point is in showing regional idents and promos (excluding for local programmes) my self. They could just get do that for the local news. Also, they could just put the logo in the corner. Confused

You would never get it on and off frame accurately.

Er... yes... well...

Okay, I'll bow to your superior knowledge, but you've got to admit it's a messy set-up the way it is.

Or maybe I'm just too tidy-minded. Wink

This is probably a load of cr*p but here goes: They could introduce some animation on the box when it goes on so it gives the regions a time to press the button or something.

Could work for getting it on, but not or getting it off again. But once again remember that the problem is that people aren't listening to talkback carefully enough or pressing buttons too late!

Has anyone ever opted out early, from London ?

I assume it's possible !

One advantage of a clean feed would be that there wouldn't be any disjointedness in the headlines bed when the region opts out for its headlines
