If the opts are still handled manually then surely we'd end up seeing VT clocks and black screens instead of the London feed?
Most of the timing errors are usually in the region of a second or two. In a case like this, a clean feed could hold the end of a trail on screen (or whatever immediately precedes the regional opt) for an extra few seconds allowing a smooth transition no matter when London opts in.
It'd just allow regions a little more leeway, so timing doesn't have to be split-second. Clearly if someone completely nods off and fogets to opt in it's not going to look too hot, but then it never is. The clean feed could also contain a breakdown caption during regional windows so if a region does have a problem, viewers will get some kind of explanation rather than an irrelevant alternative programme which they almost certainly wouldn't watch anyway.

Surely it's time for the BBC to provide a clean feed to the regions so we stop getting a flash of BBC London at every other network junction. I doubt it would be that difficult or expensive to provide, and it'd solve an age-old problem.
