Have we had a new BBC1 ident this year yet?

(Other than the EastEnders one)

There was also the one used for the World Cup.

I notice the FAQ mentions that some BBC One programmes will not be shown on BBC One HD because it is not possible to upscale them. Why would that be? Wouldn't all programmes benefit from being upscaled? Is the upscaling done 'live' as the channel is broadcast or do the programmes need to go through the process before broadcast?

Which seems to have taken the place of Footballers as it's always used to introduce Match Of The Day. I wonder if there is a new Wallace and Gromit ident on the way? Looking at the trailer for World Of Invention, 'BBC One' will either feature in the titles or be an ident.

Well, Mike W didn't say that - I inferred that they should be changed because they were old, not because they were looking tired. That is a valid point (not one I agree with) but a few people on here seem to want change for change's sake much of the time.

Well, Joe H, I hardly doubt the on air appearance of a channel relates to shooting your grandmother...

BBC One Circles are old and tired, the logo is ok but the circles theme has aged badly.

Interestingly I'm seeing BBC One but they are relaxing the circle on some of the endboards. What they should do is put 'BBC One' inside a permanent circle like Channel 5 do. The 'BBC One' logo on its own is a bit bland, and shortening the idents has slightly spoilt the impact of the logo for me.

I doubt they would want 'BBC One' in the titles as they are likely to repeat it on one of the UKTV channels, unless they make two versions of the titles of course. As for the programme, doesn't it sound a bit rubbish? It looks like it will just be Peter Sallis (or an impersonator) speaking over archive footage of inventions.

No up-conversion is done 'live' in the same way that a digibox does it

No idea why some stuff won't be able to be converted

From the FAQ:

Quote:
Where it is not possible to show a programme in HD, or upscaled standard definition, we will provide information for viewers to allow them to find the programme on the standard definition channel. We will not be broadcasting an alternative programme.

Sounds like they're saying we'll get a "We are unable to show this programme" slide for the duration of any such item. Surely there's no technical reason a programme can't be upscaled, so I can only think that some programmes (sport springs to mind) must have legal issues around upscaled broadcasts.

Just noticed this as well:

Of course they will insist on a DOG for the channel: in case we're all too stupid to remember what we're watching, and that will create a flurry of complaints. I'm sure I'll be one of them.

I'm sure they'll only have the DOG on for HD content like on ITV1 HD so it's easier to see if it is HD or not than by pressing the 'i' button on every programme all the time

I see ... upgrade the signal to HD, and then spoil it by leaving some DOG mess in the corner! Confused

Oddly, I don't press 'i' all the time to check whether the broadcast is in HD. It's either visibly HD or it's not. No amount of random button pushing on my remote is going to change that simple fact.

I no longer watch ITV1 HD because they've lit up their DOG like a belisha beacon. They also seem to forget that I have the ability to find out which channel I am watching without their help, if I choose to do some random button pushing.

its time for something bigger, bolder and more striking.

...like a single ident.

I suspect that's not quite right, it probably means the news will not be in HD, instead it'll be upscalled

Why mention the news then? There will be lots of programmes that are broadcast upscaled. There must be some reason to mention the news. Maybe it's just the regional nature of many of the bulletins that means they won't show any of the regular news broadcasts on BBC One HD. I wonder what will happen with Breakfast, isn't that likely to be one of the first news programmes able to go HD after their move up north?
