"And now on BBC One HD, something of local interest to someone somewhere in the country. But hey, it's in HD."
Does it get a special announcement beforehand?

Except Inside Out isn't in HD.
On the 29th it's the Midlands edition.

Well, that just makes it a pointless exercise :S

Quite - BBC One HD is supposed to be a simulcast of BBC One SD. Either they show a different region each week, or a slide. Showing a different show entirely would stop the channel being BBC One HD (and probably make things tricky when BBC One HD and SD are the same service)
*** EDIT TO CORRECT TYPO - I, of course, meant simulcast of BBC One SD ***

Well there's no point in Inside Out being HD if only one region per week can be shown in HD, but it's better than to put up a caption for half an hour.

Assuming you meant 'BBC One HD is supposed to be a simulcast of BBC One SD', I think it seems a bit pointless to be showing a non-HD programme on it, when they don't at other times, instead using the slide.

No, BBC ONE SD is to be a Downscaled version of BBC ONE HD from late 2011. Any SD will be upscaled to HD at the start of the process.

I didn't know that.
However, with the current arrangements, it does seem odd that local news isn't broadcast on BBC One HD because it's made in SD, but Inside Out is made in SD and shown...

Could the Inside Out - North be made in HD next week perhaps, as BBC Leeds have access to HD kit for Helicopter Heroes?
Surprised they're showing Inside Out rather than Jimmy's Food Factory which BBC Scotland show in that slot, or the travel series BBC NI show, both of which would still be legitimately simulcasting BBC One SD, and of broader appeal than a regional show.
