So it looks like it's going to be a Strictly ident but perhaps it's not going be so focused on Strictly if you get me, more of a "dancing" ident. Looks quite good.

According to this press release article, it's actually on air from November 20th so I doubt it's the Christmas Ident...

Well that's a bit silly saying it is a BBC One ident this Christmas in the first article.

Given up even reading the increasingly flat-earth rantings that seem to appear when it comes to BBC HD.
1. The difference between 1440x1080 and 1920x1080 is pretty much moot. The bulk of BBC HD output is acquired at 1440x1080 at the moment - so 1920x1080 transmission is pointless. (DVC Pro HD and HD Cam are still the massive majority of HD acquisitions - and guess what? They're 1440x1080 4:2:2 or 1440x1080 3:1:1 formats) Once HD Cam SR and formats like XDCam HD 4:2:2 and AVC Intra 100 become widespread then there is potentially an argument for 1920x1080 transmission. (Though many areas will stick to DVC Pro HD 1440x1080 for a while yet I suspect - particularly studio/OB shows which use EVS for playout)
Worth remembering that lots of Europe is using 1280x720 HD (ARD, ZDF, ARTE, NRK, SVT etc.)
2. Bitrate is NOT a reliable indicator of picture quality. I can show you identical source material encoded at 25Mbs and 10Mbs - and the 10Mbs stuff looks better. Encoder efficiency is even more important than bitrate. Sure 25Mbs with an amazingly efficient encoder looks stunning. So does an HD Cam SR master tape at 440Mbs... We have to live in the real world where the licence fee has to fund this stuff. Sky have pretty much halved their bitrates (they were forced to increase them at one point when their early low-bitrate and ineffeciently encoded transmissions looked awful) - yet you don't get rabid anti-Sky HD rantings...
(And aren't Virgin HD still using MPEG2? If so comparing Virgin's variant of BBC HD with Freeview/Freesat/Sky BBC HD is like comparing apples with oranges. Similarly comparing the Nordic BBC HD is also pointless - we have no idea who is encoding it or uplinking it, and how much concatenation has taken place)
