The logo and the circle form-up are in HD but I don't think the idents themselves are.
Are the idents in HD, or are they upscaled?

Agreed that the DOG should be removed from upscaled programming. But I am pleased that they've made the DOG so small - quite a pleasant surprise to see that. It's probably the next best thing to no DOG at all!
It'd be nice if they reduced the size of the BBC HD Channel DOG to match, rather than just moving it nearer to the corner of the screen.... but I guess even that is an improvement of sorts.

Strange considering their press release in 2006 did say they were filmed in HD. There must be HD versions knocking about somewhere.

So what's this they showing at 6.30pm ?
Whatever, it's preferable to a 30 minute slide.

It looks like the BBC One equivalent of the BBC HD Preview shown when it's off-air.
Definitely better than the caption.

It did show the full screen caption informing people where to go for regional news, and the reason why.
However, after about 5 minutes it changed to HD previews, with a caption that gave the same information underneath.
This is certainly better than just selecting London, as the default region as it doesn't favour or annoy anyone.

Nah, it makes it feel like a part time channel. I prefer ITV1's approach.

I don't!
I just end up with ITV Central - which is of no relevance to me whatsoever. However, I understand that ITV operate advertising regions which must be maintained for their income, not for the benefit of their audience.
The BBC don't have any such concerns. If they can't show my region, then I'd rather have a caption than a reminder of how London-centric they can be.

They could rotate around the regions or put out News 24. Personally, for me, I like having the option of watching Granada Reports on ITV1 HD, rather than a still slide or 30 minutes of promos - effectively dead air. How does that benefit the BBC audience ?
But hey, each to their own.

"Each to their own" is not what you're suggesting though, is it, Square Eyes?
If they can launch a separate HD channel, albeit with only a single UK wide facility, then they should've ensured that they could broadcast a national programme to cover the regional slot (à la UK Today).
The solution, whether a stop-gap, or a permanent solution, is to just broadcast a holding slide or promos rather than annoy sections of their audience.
I've already "got the message" from ITV that my region doesn't matter, by them moving it to the HQ of the adjoining region in Bristol - or Birmingham if I watch in HD, which fails to cover my area even as a passing thought.
I doubt that the BBC would really want licence payers to question their commitment to regional news by 'forcing' BBC London News on the entire nation on their new HD channel by default.
