in-channel marketing opps will be limited on #bbc one hd - on the plus side, you can watch the end credits undisturbed

This is certainly good news!
ITV1 HD did something similar from launch, either by accident or design, but have recently started doing voice-overs - even though we are still spared the full graphics of an ECP.

With ITV1, the announcer has a special HD button which they have to press to be heard on ITV1 HD. It is up to them whether they press it or not for end credits, they of course have to press it for idents.

Someone I follow on Twitter posted that on BBC HD the continuity announcer over the end of the Apprentice reminded people to change their Series Link to BBC 1 HD.
That's a bit tricky for the platforms that don't yet have BBC 1 HD on the EPG !
Also, Sky's 'Series Links' use the stream PIDS, not the EPG codes for each channel, so any series links on set on BBC HD should all automagically move across to its new EPG position (for series that are staying on BBC HD).

Wow, a DOG curtailed before the channel even launches! I genuinely thought it would be like that at launch only to be 'reduced following viewer feedback' within a couple of weeks to sound like they were appeasing viewer anger. Can't see it stopping the moans though.
And I don't know what the channel looks like on Sky but Virgin's self-generated caption on ch.108 looks hideous.

The Dog's getting reduced in size ....

The regional news placeholder is making an appearance on BBC One HD at the moment.

Gosh, yes it does. Why they've designed it in 4:3 I really don't know, but even apart from that it looks dreadful. Why not use a version of the Sky one?

The DOG has now been moved further to the left, outside the old 16:9 SD safe area which for some reason the BBC still use for HD, although not yet reduced in size.

The safe area for UK HD productions is generally the same for SD productions - as they are almost universally shown on SD as well as HD outlets.
The UK standard for most shows is still 14:9 shoot and protect - but the 14:9 graphics safe area is significantly narrower than the 14:9 action safe area. Effectively 14:9 graphics safe is within the area of 4:3 centre-cut (but doesn't allow for horizontal overscan in 4:3).
Obviously HD platform specific stuff (HD-only DOGs) etc. can be outside 14:9 graphics safe - but anything simulcast in SD has to respect the SD requirements.
Whether 14:9 safe disappears once analogue has been switched off is an interesting question - we could conceivably move to 16:9 safe on all platforms - on the basis that everyone SHOULD be watching digitally and on a receiver capable of 16:9 letterboxing when feeding a 4:3 display.
