Way-hey, long overdue! I'm very pleased to hear this news, hopefully it should free up a lot of space on the BBC HD channel.

How's that going to work then? How will they fit in a second HD channel, especially on DTT? Will the existing HD service just carry programmes from Two, Three and Four?

Isn't it a replacement for rather than in addition too though, which is actually bad news IMO.

BBC HD will continue alongside BBC One HD but will mainly show high def programmes from BBC Two-Four.

Didn't Channel 5 hand back their DTT HD licence, with the BBC having automatic first dibs?

Worth also noting that this will be BBC One London HD and so it's probable that any Nations HD stuff will be on BBC HD instead, wonder whether it'll carry LDN or we'll get a return of UK today.

This link has more information than the previous one...

So presumably, when the BBC have to hand over the Freeview slot to Five, there will be a need for a channel showing the best of all 6 channels just as BBC HD currently does, on Freeview only, with BBC One HD and the BBC HD showing just BBC2-4 and kids' stuff continuing on other platforms? Gets complicated, unless they can hang onto that slot long term.

I think Five have to bid for a new slot when it's released - BBC get this automatically.

Ridiculous really - can only manage one interactive stream but now get two HD streams!

Not really, 'interactive streams' (they're not interactive of course) are a bit of a waste of bandwidth - showing nothing for most of the time and then looped video for quite a bit of the rest of the time.

Although a BBC ONE HD consisting of mostly up-converted SD material is arguably a waste too

As mentioned in it's own thread, EastEnders is to go HD according to DigitalSpy...

I am surprised there has been no mention of The One Show going HD. That would be 2.5 hours a week of quite varied HD material if it was to happen. Maybe they want to see if the new presenter is popular and the show has a long term future before committing to it.

So they've got six months to completely rebuild / drastically refurbish the backlot then? IIRC in a previous thread it was suggested the EE backlot is far worse than Corrie in HD due to it being completely fake whereas Corrie uses real bricks and the like.

Is River City HD?
