how many minutes in? (in Part 2)

It's at 1:24:32. It's edited and cuts straight to Duncan saying that they're going to BBC News.

Part 2 is now up with fault included.

Yes, although they have removed most of the fault caption and the 1 minute+ of frozen ball is now only on screen for a few seconds. They have kept the news though.

First fault is at about 1:24:20 until 1:32:35.
Second fault is at about 1:47:44 until the end of the video as they never came back from the second fault (at least not on BBC One).

Here is how the show started (late) on BBC Two...

I think they showed Hairy Bikers as a filler.

That breakdown was dreadfully handled. Him ad-libbing 2 dozen different versions of the same apology was cringworthy, plus the fact that he was talking over the intro of all the ident music meaning he was being drowned out half the time

Opting into the BBC News Channel was strange and then cutting straight back to the Golf without introducing it was sloppy

If they insist on using ident music as breakdown music then some longer versions need to be commissioned

Was it Sissons' watch that beeped a couple of seconds after 5pm on that iPlayer footage?

Duncan did the same thing when something for the weekend broke down a few weeks back.

I think so, I've noticed that loads of times when Sissons is on. If I wasn't allowed to let my watch beep every hour at school then Sissons shouldn't be either. Tsk.

Why on earth use ident music, just bung a CD of library music on. I suppose it's all the branding freaks at work again..

It is my understanding that they don't have CD/minidisc players in the network continuity suites any more. I believe since the move of continuity from Television Centre to the Red Bee Broadcast Centre that the breakdown music now comes off a server (at least the music accompanying Pages from Ceefax broadcasts does), whether the ident snippet music as used in today's breakdown is on the same server I don't know.

Well yes, I build TV facilities for a living. Some broadcasters do still choose to have 'belt and braces' back up, with standby VTRs and CD players, small mixers, and audio and video jackfields, should they suffer a complete IT meltdown.

Where it comes from doesn't affect what is played, it will be a editorial decision rather than what they are stuck with for technical reasons. I'd have thought that the music you hear is on the looped animating breakdown slide to make it easier to get it to air, but they're bound to have other copies and other music available (in case the device running the looped breakdown slide breaks down too!)

AIUI they have a shared system for storing audio - announcements, music etc - instead of mini discs or cds so that everything is available everywhere. I.e. they don't need to locate and move mini discs between playout areas, everything is available at the touch of a button

I totally agree.
It was dreadfull.
What happened to standby programmes?
Presentation should care about that one word - 'Presentation'!
To crash to the rolling news channel - then just crash back out only to loose the programme and crash back to the news channel is terrible. Then to not even come back to Pres for a further apology before the 1730 news is just unforgivable, and just goes to show how bad Playout has become. If I was BBC TV I would be very upset at the way that was handled. Duncan, however, did everything that was expected of him, and did it very well, I just think it was terribly directed and the editorial decisions were suspect to say the least.

I'm going to disagree with a lot of posts here.

Firstly, I think opting into BBC News was the obvious thing to do, although they should have had some caption on screen to explain why. Standby programmes are only really suitable if you know you won't be returning to the broadcast at all.

And secondly, I didn't think the music was bad at all. The announcer annoyed initially, stating the obvious far too often, but actually it was good to here the ident music put to good use. I agree longer cuts would have been better, but it served it's job. Remember this was an unusually lengthy breakdown too - most of the time they get back on air much quicker.

And watching it yesterday I'll reiterate the point I made about the new short idents - they could easily begin with a short BBC One logo animation (similar to the beginning of the 8pm news) on the first rift, then show action through to the second rift before having the logo form up again over the ident.
