How do you make a font! I'd love to do that! I'd use it all of the time. I'd do all my homework in my font! It would be such a good skill for money. As pointed out in this thread.

Martin, I know you do font design! Is it really hard? I imagine you have to develop a uniform, universal rule, sumin' like:
"curves in letters thin, 'til the apex, then thicken to end." or:
"straight lines widen, then narrow.".
Am I right? Which programs would one use?

IIRC correctly from my ill-fated attempt to turn my handwriting into a font, you have to design th letter, and then design all the places it grows and such like.

It's a lot "cheaper" than you'd think, actually. Say a good font family costs you maybe £250. If you're a designer, it means you've got that font for life; so the font's value per use is actaully 250/(the number of designs you create with that font).

For the BBC, £250 on an integral part of their brand image is peanuts.

Especially when compared with the cost of a custom font, like Sky, ITV and Channel 4 use.

For those of you who want to make a font like your own handwriting, try http://www.fontifier.com/. You'll need a printer, a scanner, $9, and a credit card and/or PayPal account.

Why not?
The custom fonts that C4 and ITV use are excellent.... and instantly recognisable

Well, he did make the exact same noise when ITV got a custom font from FS due to not being able to find it and use it.

I say get a custom font family, everyone's doing it.

And because every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn't have them, that's why they're so distinctive.

Believe it or not, the vast, vast majority of the public have no desire to buy every font they see in TV presentation.

I never said they did. But for those who want them, we have to rely on the amateur fontsmiths.

They're only amateur because you cannot touch their fonts.. ever. If they were amateur, would FS be the hot property they are right now when it comes to custom font work and most importantly, would you want their offerings?

Sorry about that, just a font you see and if someone wants it to be an exclusive commission then screw it all to hell, it'll be just that. No amount of mudslinging will change that or get you a copy.
