I wonder if they been put up so the right region goes under the reight name on the EPG.

Oh, yes, I'm sure that's the reason for them doing it.

My problem is that I know Joe Punter understands that he lives near Cambridge or Oxford, but what will he make of being in "East (W)", I wonder?

Whilst we reasonably knowledgeable folks on here understand what the West of East is, I can't help thinking that Mr Punter is going to be more confused than helped by such names.

Are the regions available now on DSat. I understand they were taken off while changes were carried out.

Well at least they wont have dogs when there on the EPG

'"Viewers who have manually tuned to the English regional variants in advance of their launch in the EPG on July 29th may notice a Digital On-screen Graphic ( DOG - sometimes called a logo, or channel ident), appearing over the channels.
This is for final testing and identification including the launch on 29th July, whereafter they will be removed.'

The DOGs have gone again now and the channels have been given their final EPG names, ready for Tuesday.

And YES, as speculated right back at the beginning of this thread, "ONE" has become "1" in order to save space.

The Hull feed gets the prize for the most convoluted abbreviation, it's "BBC1EYrks&L" if memory serves correctly!

Oxford has remained "Oxford"; and Norwich and Cambridge have ended up as "East (E)" and "East (W)" respectively.

I was having a look around England this evening, and apart from enjoying Spotlight again [with perhaps the most comprehensive weather forecast of them all? Screen after screen of more stats and info, and a gallery afterwards with the Vision On music -- fantastic], and a bit from East Midlands -- the lady on Look North Newcastle, not C***l M***a else I wouldn't have stayed, mentioned the changes on Tuesday.

She said how, if you were watching this, you obviously aren't watching on DSat [almost true], and that they get literally a *handful* of letters asking why it's not on DSat. Not sure if anywhere else mentioned it, but I daresay they wouldn't until Monday anyway..

Don't forget though, Ch.942, every day at 6.55pm -- your evening won't be complete without it.

They ought to do the same for Wales, to fit in "BBC1 Wales", which would look a lot nicer.

942 at 6.55?

Not that famous musical, "Brockway on Broadway"?

I think the reasoning is that the Oxford region is much smaller (and terrestrially fed by the relatively low power Oxford transmitter only - plus relays?) Could it be it is actually an abbreviation for BBC Oxfordshire?

The East (E) region is fed from two large transmitters and includes Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex - so calling it Norwich rather than East would be a bit of a problem. Similarly the East (W) region is fed from Sandy Heath - which is a very high power transmitter and covers Northants, Cambs, plus bits of Beds, Herts and Bucks - calling it BBC Cambridge might not be politically as acceptable as it covers 6 counties rather than mainly one?

I'm glad that BBC1 rather than BBC One is being used - I thought it would have to be...

The East region has always been difficult to describe simply -

It's not that small - the ERP of the Oxford transmitter is exactly the same as Belmont - 500KW so technically, it should be able to transmit to a wide area.

As for relays, it has only two - Ascott-under-Wychwood and Charlbury.

Yes, I mean there aren't many options...

Even if you put BBC ONE Camb, it would be like it was for a county. You can't call it BBC ONE West, obviously, as it's not.

So BBC ONE East (West), even though it's a bit dodgy in the sense that it's the west of the east Shocked is the only option.
