Can someone please explain how the Channel Island signal gets from the Channel Islands to us on Sky Digital.

Tell me in basic terms... ie... the signal gets beamed from CI to Plymouth....... and evenutally uplinked at.... you get the drift

The output of the studio in Jersey will go be sent down a line to Plymouth where it will be opted into the BBC1 South West service. Then it is sent to London, multiplexed with the other regions and uplinked to the satellite.

Eventually the transmitter in Jersey will take its feed from the satellite.

did anyone notice tonight that in most regions one of the regualr presenters was away. i.e Stuart off LE, Sally off ST, Anne off EMT, Helen off LN Hull, Gordon off NWT.

Was there some awards presentation tonight or something?

In the case of Look North, Helen vacated her seat to give Nicola Shaw some experience of thew 18:30 programme. She'll be one of the new presenters when the Belmont region splits fully from Emley.

Do I take it from that, Larry, that DTT channel allocations have gone through for, at least, Fremont Point?

Not sure about DTT - but I believe there is a plan to source ANALOGUE for the Channel Islands from DSat rather than an off-air link from the UK.

Now the BBC is moving to FTA broadcasting then they can chose from a much wider range of DSat receivers to source this from (as they don't need to use one with Sky decryption) so they could potentially introduce AFD switching for on-site ARCs at the transmitter to generate 12F12, 14L12 and 16L12 feeds?

Yes, the plan is to feed analogue from satellite and ARC as needed

Yep - the route from transmitter to screen will be hilarious for Jersey!

BBC One Network from London to Plymouth.

Jersey studio output to Plymouth.

BBC One Channel Islands created from these two feeds in Plymouth, and fed back to London for uplink to Astra 2D Digital satellite.

BBC One Channel Islands transmitter fed by off-air reception of Astra 2D satellite.

AIUI there may be a low quality, less delayed, viewing feed in Jersey so that they can monitor BBC One South West for their opt-out? (Otherwise they would have to watch off-air from DSat which would be very late?)

Just an update to say that I can now get all the English regions via the Add Channels (as I couldn't before due to being in Scotland) - I wonder what I will watch first...

Ah yes, but then you won't be able to join in the longest-running regional telly debate: Is Peter Levy's hair natural or not?
