Plus, it's one of the few programmes to have only one presenter, Southampton, Newcastle and London are the other *main* regions to have the one presenter. I daresay the opts have only one though, Close Up East has just the one.

Are you saying the North West isn't a main region! as North West Tonight only has one presenter.

I caught Look North (Y&L) at Lunchtime the other day and found the way the presenter seemed to look down her nose at me rather off-putting. Look North Hull is definatly filmed in a broom cupboard at Royal Mail with all the red and the dark window - looks like a post box!

Midlands today's studio looks too small with the two red panels being so close to the window and the sidebar doesn't look right.

Talking studios...
I find that the North West's window is the only one i've seen so far that looks nearly real and fits in with the studio. It seems to be the only one that goes below the railings so they look like they have a point and the 'bars' accross the window break it up and seem to add some sort of 'reality to it'.

Actually - loosly related to regions. I had a dream last night...I tuned into the regions on Sky and the same thing was showing on them all. But it's because the regional news had finished and it was the weather update just before 7 O Clock.

I recognised the fella as well. I think it's a sign - it wasn't a bad dream at all though. In fact...Kay thinks it's fab. Judge for yourself:

Oh goodness yes, apologies for that -- I've no idea how I missed that out, of all regions. I've always reckoned Gordon should get it over with and have Dianne join him permanently, if not at least from midway through when they move to the incredibly small chairs. They do get on very well. And now that scary Heather Stott is safely away on the other side of the world, I thought she'd move in there, but I think she's probably too busy with GMR.

Anyway I'm glad now, after being told otherwise before, that the rest of the country has the opportunity to escape network continuity from the 10th, and watch via BBC ONE Wales [as I'm *sure* everyone can't wait to do]. Much more pleasant experience..

I wouldn't have thought they'd put the weather presenter in that early in the programme as the only 'reporting' Dianne has done AFAIK was Box Office and she does have her show on GMR about Entertainment but i'd have thought NWT was too serious for that.

Anyway as my Grandma would say - why have two people when one person can do the job fine (she is incensed at the BBC having two presenters on the 6).

btw what do you mean by the "incredibly small chairs"? do you mean the ones at the desk? if you do, Gordon usually sits there for the whole programme.

Well there used to be a couple of soft chairs, table and screen on the NWT set where some *light* items used to be presented from -- mind you thinking of it the chairs were mustard I think, so went out a little while ago now. They used to be very small too, and Dianne used to sometimes join Gordon for some of the lighter items at that point.

I'm not saying that the job can't be done with just one person, I just think two people suit regional news better than one, but I agree with your grandma, she talks sense, two on the 6 O'Clock news doesn't work for me either.

Sometimes if the weather guy in Wales [Derek] is on location somewhere and there's not much sports news so the main presenter does it, they end up looking rather lonely.

Anybody would look lonely on Wales Today's massive set!!

The soft chairs still exist and are white - Last used AKAIK for a Local Election interview with Cllrs from Burnley (Con. Lab. LibDem.) discussing the threat of the BNP. However they are currently used very infrequently but were used every Wednesday for 'Beswick's Beat'. The 'soft' area of the set has altered alot at the moment with the removal of the two 'windows' and the installation of the big screen.

I still can't get Wales, Chris, so I THINK it's just the "third" transponder with only CB and CI on which isn't encrypted.

Suspect it IS encrypted - but with UK wide rather than England specific restriction - easiest way to check (I'm not near my receiver at the moment) is to remove your viewing card. If it is encrypted then you'll get an error message after a short while.

Can someone please explain how the Channel Island signal gets from the Channel Islands to us on Sky Digital.

Tell me in basic terms... ie... the signal gets beamed from CI to Plymouth....... and evenutally uplinked at.... you get the drift Laughing

Thanks to Katherine for the inspiration for this question Cool

The Wales Today studio is nice, yes. It's much nicer than the national news set.

Do Newsline and/or Reporting Scotland have a big screen come seated area like in the above pic?

For Reporting Scotland:
No, apart from the weather cso but it's never used for anything except the 6.55 weather summary. Their not very innovative at Queen Margaret Drive!

Wales Today seems to be pretty unique in terms of their studio and the different areas it has, stairs, round soft seat, big space in front of seat, and that massive screen.

Newsline and Reporting Scotland seem to have very English regions-looking studios to me, with a normal sized back drop, normal desk [from which they don't seem to move], and a small plasma from which the weather forecaster does their thing.

Plus the fact that the studios are pretty plainly coloured, unlike Wales which has lots of nice reds [or pinks/purples, depending on what programme the studio is being used for]. And Reporting Scotland is that ghastly yellow colour the English regions had, and did away with last year. Newsline's graphics save them though, imo, despite the amount of branding.

Here are a couple of caps showing the studio sideways on from last week ~
