I therefore take it that the transmitters for ITV do not cover the same areas as those for the BBC.
No. Except for a few relays here and there and Channel 5, all TV transmitters (that is BBC, ITV1, Ch4) are co-sited. Each transmitter site has all 4 services.
This has always been the case with UHF TV - far easier (both for the companies involved and the viewers) to everything coming from the same place
Except for a few cases such as Scotland, the Channel Islands, South East and Oxfordshire the ITV/BBC regions are almost identical.
The major regions are almost identical - but the sub-regions are less so?
Border Scotland is part of the BBC Scotland region, but Border England is part of the BBC North East and Cumbria region?
BBC Oxford is a smaller region than Central News South (Abingdon) etc.

Officially, BBC South West is the English region for Devon and Cornwall. Also officially, Carlton Westcountry is the ITV station for Devon, Cornwall, part of Somerset and part of Dorset. .

that is correct although I wish we got BBC NE&C here instead of Scotland tripe. Both Borders are as bad as each other although the bizarre Scotland idents that don't animate or anything are quite funny.
Not that I watch ITV - it has been deleted from my TV for reasons I'm sure you know about.

You want to be careful with mapping BBC North West on Granada, as most of North Wales would then get North West Tonight. The Nations are probably more secure in the sense that the *actual* postcode is identified as being a Welsh/Scottish address, therefore getting their Nation-al news, and so the only issues are really for BBC English regions.
But surely the *actual* postcode should be used in England as well though, against the territory the BBC regional news programme covers? The ITV region mapping is a problematic distraction to all the decisions. Apart from Newsline/UTV there are no real absolute matches, even Carlton London and LDN don't match exactly.
i've seen midlands breakfast use both long and short titles
look north (ne&c) have no titles and go as far as to stick the national breakfast branding on the screens behind them. oh, and its not very up beat.
Wales Today don't use titles, nor do North West Today. Viewers are simply greeted with a painted-on smile from Jayne in Wales, or an almighty clunk and a shrill 'good morning!'/loud jacket/mis-timed opt from Tina in the NW.
I'm sure the last time this came up it was found that only the Midlands and Lun-dun bothered to introduce the bulletins properly with titles.
However Wales *does* use full titles, as is only polite, for the afternoon BBC TWO bulletins -- unlike the selfish Scots and Northern Ireland lot. There's not friendly for you. And the WT 6pm preview has titles. But Newsline does have signing every day, so that means Scotland are officially the rudest.
But Wales never has Breakfast travel news since there's never any to report. Ever.

A bit off topic, but anyone knows which regions currently play the opening titles during breakfast opt-outs?

They may be co-sited, but that's not to say the transmission strength is the same - hence slightly dodgy ITV pictures when you can get BBC1 fine (wild generalisation, but you get the idea)

The transmission strength is normally the same, but that's not to say that some frequencies are less interference free!

Yes, today is now what we all know as Kay Day - as fans all over the UK and in parts of Europe have witnessed the spectacular event that is Kay.
Rather amusing moment on EMT when I switched over - cut to the weather shot a bit early and Anne and Dom over-reacted in that "soooo surprised" style that they both do so well. I'm sure Anne drinks something before she sits down in that chair but they really are a fabulous pairing. I had forgotten how good the programme was after not seeing it in ages.
But fear not - my love for Kay is stronger than ever...and I wouldn't want to wake up with anyone else.

Well I must say I was impressed with Look North last night where the presenters introduced themselves in vision over the preceding ident music before the headlines and titles started - very swish.
