So is there not a big "it's gone titsup" button that puts an apology caption to air? I'd have thought a simple two channel mixer (operated by the announcer to let the director get on with fixing the bigger problem) to select between normal output and caption would be a straightforward thing to set up?

Does the announcer still look after music during breakdowns? Or even fading up their own mic?

It's not as simple as it used to be to show a breakdown slide. The announcer's mic setup is the same as ever: a fader on the director's sound mixer for the con booth, and a fader in the con booth for the mic. Not sure about the music situation.

So why not give the anno his own fader? It made a lot more sense when pres was self-op by the announcer - in theory this sounds attractive to the bean counters too.

As Dan said, the anno does have their own fader.

Also, it was only ever self-op (in London) for the OU wasn't it?

Scotland had a bit of bit of problem with the title music. They got the full length of titles for the first time ever and the Big BOOM was heard then a bang of a pen and then their loud headline music played for half the titles then they tryed getting rid of it but it still continued under the title music.

Oh dear... EastEnders End Credit Promo started too early. Poor network director should give the automation a damn good thrashing.

Yes the announcers did do some self-oping I believe. I have watched an old clip introducing Play School from a clock. At the cut to Play School you can hear a good old fashioned clunk as a button was pressed.

AIUI they mixed between slides, symbols and clocks during their links - but all trails and programmes were run by directors and visions mixers (and of course in those days the VT machines were all big devices down in the basement so they wouldn't actually run VTs, just cue a bloke with a beard and sandals to run them instead)

I normally wear sandals, indeed, I'm wearing sandals now; far cooler than shoes.

Does anyone have a video clip of this? I wouldn't mind seeing it. Smile
