i'm not really sure they need a live announcer for bbc 2 at all - surely the duty announcer on bbc 1 could pre-record all the links for bbc 2, 3, and 4 and do bbc 1 live?

You're assuming that nothing unexpected is going to happen though, which is unrealistic - especially on the evidence of the last few weeks.
Just witnessed some more problems on BBC1. The announcement into the news went out early - with Tai Chi Straight (no subtitles version). Then, the ident jumped back to the start. Then it did again - at which point BBC1 SW Acrobats came in. They were 1 sec late cutting into the news.
Was BBC One East the only region to bodge up just before tonights six or was it a network problem? The Tai Chi ident played (network version not regional) for a good 10 seconds Then there was a VO "This is BBC One, now the six oclock news with George Allagiah & Sian Williams" the ident contimued to play for a few seconds before the Acrobats ident started (again it was a network ident, not regional) and a second VO "Now on BBC One the six o'clock news" Then the screen went black for a second, then the news started.
