Television was a lot less slicker generally, no-one's pretending it wasn't. But if things did go wrong, someone would notice and act there and then.

Computers are literal beings - they only do exactly what they are programmed to do, automation errors in pres are well-documented.

Yes, I must admit, breakdowns are generally not very well handled these days. The results of the manual intervention required in such circumstances can make for interesting viewing though!
