Thought you might be interested in this - unfortunately the real media version is only on the BBC internal intranet ... but I'm sure you'll see it very soon!

BBC Creative Services, BBC Media Arc and Aardman Animations have joined forces to create new Christmas idents for BBC One.

The idents will air from 5 December and feaure 3D animation including the creation of special characters produced by Aardman.

The Christmas campaign highlights three of the BBC's key Christmas and New Year programmes: the drama Lost World, film favourite Toy Story, and a new episode of Only Fools and Horses. The idents feature three toys coming to life, and attempting to build their own BBC One balloon with comic results.

The animation cleverly and humorously identifies each programme whilst remaining unmistakably Aardman.

Sounds very good, the last two have been nice but nothing special really. I always thought good xmas balloons would be flying over city centres with decorations, ah well, these sound very good anyway.

Well hopefully this won't be the last Christmas featuring the balloon!

Didn't Lambie Nairn usually make the Xmas idents? Or has he been booted for being late with the BBC TWO idents! Wink

Wouldn't be anything to do with that character in the Nick Park magazine ad for Canon cameras, would it?

It will be interesting to see how the designs work on the promos, and the ident.

I wonder if any BBC region will jump the gun by showing the BBC ONE Christmas ident, even before the Christmas period, to link into regional programmes like BBC East did with last year's BBC ONE Christmas ident?

I'm sure they must just mean the trailers/animations start tonight - I can't believe they'd start the idents this early.

From that report it sounds to me that this year's idents will be better than previous years. At least they're doing more than one, unlike last year. Wink

the one i've seen looks quite sweet - includes the Trotters yellow three wheeler!

I was watching a video of Lenny Henry recorded at what must have been Christmas 1995/6 .. I think! Anyway one of the bumpers included a Christmas tree decorated with little glittery '1' baubles, and along side was Del's Reliant Robin wrapped in christmas paper, which then crashed down onto 2 wheels whilst Del said 'You wally' ... it was quite funny!

I've got one on tape somewhere from '89 which has a toy train on rails going past lots of presents and a tree in a room and at the end of the trailer to get to the Xmas ident, the train went across the screen from right to left to reveal the ident at the other side - nice touch that was!

Anyone remember the Christmas trailer from the early 90's which had John Vergo saying 'Pot as many balls as you can'? Can anyone remember the exact year?

Cheers, Asa
