BBC One Christmas idents 2020

Split from New BBC One ident

I had a look back last night on TV Ark at Christmas idents since the balloons. I know it’s been said many a time but christ, the red curtain year, what were they thinking? That frog ident. What the hell is it?

It's Prince Naveen from the Disney film, The Princess and the Frog.
They promoted their films with those idents that year with Shrek and Up being featured.

Luckily BBC One in Northern Ireland had a more festive alternative whilst showing the awful red curtain idents, with a cute ident showing kids building a snowman and ending with the BBC One animation on a red glittery bauble. It also features the music from the first Circles Christmas ident from way back in 2006.

You're right, it was 2007 when this practice started, but that hasn't been the case for every subsequent Christmas. For example, the Wallace and Gromit idents of 2008 were still in use on New Years Day 2009. Same with the Dr Who ones the following Christmas- the David Tennant idents remained until the Doctor transformed into Matt Smith, then for the rest of the day, they showed the news-safe version (without David) for each of the remaining NYD junctions.

I think the very last time (to date) that a Christmas ident was actually still being shown on New Years Day was 2012. The "Consider Yourself" ones were shown throughout the morning and afternoon, then the normal ones returned at 7pm.

From 2013 onwards, the Christmas idents get their last airing in the final junction before midnight on New Years Eve.

WaG and Doctor Who years, I'm guessing it was because they were airing on NYD (WaG had a repeat showing of Loaf and Death, which iirc, beat Emmerdale in the ratings).

2012 sounds an odd one. If it had been all day, it would make sense with NYD being a Sunday that year, but to switch back a 7 sounds rather pointless. If they had launched a new ident, fair enough, but I don't think they did that year?

BBC Two also going festive tonight it seems before Dragon's Den (8:10pm if you plan to record):

It looks like someone's bleached the Minions.

I'm genuinely quite excited for this, and I haven't yet watched the video package for it although have seen the images. It seems strange saying that you need to "put some life" into a TV channel, but it's true. Pouring a mug of tea and a couple of people dancing at home isn't exactly what you'd expect from the nations "most loved" channel.

With circles, I can remember almost every ident and can hum the tune of it in my head easily. I wasn't into TV pres back then either. With Oneness, I can't really remember many other than those people on a dog walk...

Oh yes, that's my favourite of the Christmas package for Two.
Very colourful and somewhat hypnotic

That got past the rebrand police then.

Well, it's not like we'll see that on air. Though, it would've made a nice sting when they were using the 1991 idents.

They poured all the money into the ‘It’s Showtime!’ campaign with Rob Brydon, didn’t they, and the idents themselves were absolutely rubbish.

I’d also suggest, from memory, that 2012 was the first 1st December Christmas ident launch, as the idents were so built into the campaign for the whole Christmas schedule.

I do look back on the 2010 and 2011 idents with real fondness, especially the 2011 ones which were so well linked into the ‘Consider Yourself’ promo, including the variant which was a full play of the trail which then became the ident endboard. I thought it was really good.

The Gruffalo's Child ident into a Christmas promo. Endboard looks nice.
No new idents yet.

It's a Christmas filled with Julia Donaldson by the looks of it, The Gruffalo after Strictly, followed by Zog before His Dark Materials.
