I suppose Northern Ireland can still do it as it's a very Christian country, whereas Network don't want to go too Christmassy, as England is very multicultural, hence this year's generic 'Showtime' theme with very little mention of Christmas itself, because they need to be inclusive. I doubt we'll ever see anything as Christmassy as an Advent Calendar on Network these days.

Whats that got to do with anything? There's a difference between Network that have a can't be bothered attitude and BBC One NI go that extra mile. It's been common knowledge for quite a while. It won't be the first and the last time they put the network to shame

What a load of rubbish - which BTW BBC1 NI's ident looks great.

Is it more down to BBC NI having to compete with Julian and co on the other side?

hmm, not sure about that take on it, plenty of mention of "BBC One Christmas" in the trails and announcements. I don't think there's an agenda at play, I just think it's an interesting, different idea executed annoyingly lacklusterly.

I'd agree with the comments about the relative simplicity of the non-character based idents being a refreshing change to an extent but much more could have been/might still be done with the theme...

I'm just speculating as to the way the BBC Marketing Dept in London think.

Cheers for the advent calendar caps - a much better way of involving viewers than the Merry Christmas messages on the network.

Ronant - since when has BBC Christmas presentation been about Christianity?

Completely agree. One year you can have something very festive, the next something that's a bit more generic winter, I don't think it's some BBC agenda. And I wouldn't be too bothered by having simple idents - this year's silent news one is refreshing in a way - you just get the feeling with the trails that it was building up to be something a bit better. Could they not at least have had the curtain raise into the programme animation?

NI to the rescue with a nice advent calendar and ident. I do wonder how London let them get away with it though, it's making a clear point that they don't think they're good enough this year!

Maybe Network directors could sneak out Snowball or the cul-de-sac ident at some point when they think the Marketing team won't be watching? Wink
