Re the dodgy BBC logo - perhaps they thought it would give the tacked on box a more realistic, hand made/drawn look against the paper backdrop. Note that the menu above uses the standard box logo.
True but this ident just doesn't fit in with the rest of the BBC2 theme. It wouldn't be so bad if they changed the ending so it was like closing a book or something rather than just an animated cut out

Yes it does. It continues the window on the world theme.
It doesn't work that well at all IMO - it's just a random animation which cuts to a BBC2 trailer style endboard at the end. It's an ident which could easily be tweaked to be used on any channel really.
So could many idents.
I prefer the way it ignores the normal theme to be honest. Many of the best christmas idents of the past were not "on theme" and looking at BBC1, the logo really has limited the creativity.
I hear what you're saying Brekkie. They could have made them look more unique to BBC Two by having the gremlin creature cutting a 2 in the tree or trying to capture a 2 shaped butterfly.
But their uniqueness (or lack of) to BBC Two doesn't take anything away from the fact that they are superbly designed idents which, in my opinion, represent Two very well at Christmas time.
Speaking of the iPlayer, BBC2's ident has been switched to an Xmassy one as well... but per the one on this week's Top Gear, it's (a) mute and (b) out-of-ratio (letterboxed inside a 16:9 frame).
I see the main news bulletins are being introduced with standard idents rather than edited regional versions of the Christmas ident (unless the 10pm NE&C junction was a mistake?).
I've been trying to capture the BBC1 stings most of the day since 1pm and they don't seem to be playing them out much at all. I got the Wallace and Gromit snow angels sting and that's about it.
