I was surprised to see the BBC One Christmas ident debut tonight. Way too early - Saturday 13 December. Next Saturday (20 December) would have been plenty early enough for its launch.
As far as I'm concerned, it's quite a good ident. Better than Penguins of last year. I recorded the main part of Strictly Come Dancing to watch it later this evening (I was having dinner when it was on). That was my first time of seeing the said ident when I started watching the video recording of Strictly Come Dancing around 7:30pm. Was that the Xmas ident's first showing at 6:10 tonight (time of tonight's Strictly Come Dancing), or did it get shown before the preceding programme?
I want to know what the other seven BBC channels are doing in the way of Xmas idents this year. Unfortunately I couldn't be bothered setting my HDD-DVD recorder to record programme junctions overnight from BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC News and BBC Parliament, nor tomorrow's first thing offerings from CBBC and CBeebies. I'll get them in due course though.

Anyway, for those that missed them here are this year's first showings of last year's BBC Two Christmas ident (which is similarly spoiled by an obtrusive subtitles tag) and BBC Four's resident Christmas ident:
BBC Two
What is it with people tagging everything as being 'HD' when the BBC idents will only ever be in SD?
Quite glad last years have returned to BBC2 as they were pretty good
When YouTube introduced Higher Quality, people started using 'HD' for Higher Resolution, but now they've introduced real 720p HD, it's a bit confusing, from what I can see Jonny's just upscaled it.

I don't know if this is right or not, but on YouTube - whenever you see something tagged HD or High Quality, it means you can watch the video in YouTube's High Quality/HD mode (video looks better than SD). It doesn't necessary means that it was recorded in HD

He must have done, although looking at the quality of it, it's barely SD quality - it looks very blurred.

But this person has manually written '*HD*' into the title, so it's not just the metadata that makes it seem as though it's HD

Have you clicked on the 'watch in HD' tag? If not the video will look very blurred as you have described.
As I understand it, YouTube's HD option provides superior video quality compared to Normal or High Quality YouTube videos. It is very confusing!
Obviously the idents have not been captured in HD, but when played back using YouTube's HD mode the videos are displayed in better quality than in the modes mentioned above. (Perhaps we should continue this conversation via PM?)

Yep, looks much better after clicking the HD option.... but it's still sub-SD, it looks much better on my TV set

There's no denying that YouTube's HD mode is still no substitute for viewing the idents on your TV.
All I know is this: the videos I have uploaded play in superior quality when upscaled to enable YouTube's HD mode than when played in YouTube's High Quality mode.
To hopefully prevent any further confusion, I will remove the *HD* tags from the video's titles.
I hope this helps

There was a sparky sting but no idents

Does anyone know if BBC Three will be doing anything this year?
With no Christmas Blobs to dig out I had presumed we would have seen some new festive idents from Three tonight.

Wish they'd fix the BBC logo on the BBC Two idents - the letters aren't vertically centered properly.
