Snowball is definately the best Christmas ident of the circles era.

I'd agree with that although I think with Wallace and Gromit we could all do with a laugh this year.

Although the same joke over 500 times might wear a bit thin.

Following Strictly's early ending, BBC One filled 6 or 7 minutes with trailers and stings, before starting 'Outnumbered' three minutes before the published start time.

BBC One Wales took the Network feed for the duration of this.

To me they were and still are. Not totally hateful just bland. I think Penguins has been the best, visually striking and that's what I like in an ident. And looking back at both of those they cntained far more Christmas imagery than this new one, yet I don't hear complaints about Wallace & Gromit not being Christmassey enough. Also this is the first time that there hasn't been a resolve of the BBC One logo.

Snowball was bad, Penguins was an improvement, and this one is simply awful. It could be used all throughout winter and nobody would notice - that's how non-Christmassy it is.

It depends how far back you're talking though, I mean, like cylon.. in terms of comparison to some of the xmas idents of the past it's bland but for the circles era it's been the best so far.

I think what these idents do show is how poor the logo actually is. I'm sure if Nick Park had had the balloon or the old "1" to work with they'd be much better.

Yes, very odd - anyone in the know care to explain? Confused

The BBC2 xmas endboard was used in the long BBC1 junction just then.

Quoted for truth, it just isn't a logo that can be manipulated or put in different situations like the '2' or '4' or the old '1' from the nineties or the balloon.

Glad to hear that they are back in service, although why the festive style hasn't been used in certain trails advertising programmes airing over the Christmas period, such as Nigella and Rab C Nesbitt, remains a mystery. A bit sloppy if you ask me but then that just about sums up BBC Two presentation post 2007 rebrand.

Anyway, for those that missed them here are this year's first showings of last year's BBC Two Christmas ident (which is similarly spoiled by an obtrusive subtitles tag) and BBC Four's resident Christmas ident:

PS Anyone else missing the Christmas Blobs?

I love the W&G idents but I agree they might get a bit boring after a while.

I like the "We're on BBC1 Gromit" near the end. Smile

Indeed, seems to have a been a late show-up, but at least it's here.

In terms of this era, I reckon this year is a respectable effort, considering the News symbol is not just a shortened version of the main ID, which compared to recently is noteworthy...

But yes, in the grand scheme of things, the past few years haven't been great.

There's a focus (in discussion here) on the visual pros / cons of idents past, but not so much about the sound. There's been a definite shift in the approach to the music for BBC1 festive idents compared to 10 years ago:

In the 90s to early 00s it used to be a big intro / stab / jingle at the start, then it'd lead into a bed of sorts that was well-suited to continuity annos (listen to any BBC1 Xmas symbols from 1995 to 2001 and you can hear this trend) . Around the time of the R&M idents, this changed to soundtracks that just start and 'trundle along' more or less, they don't hit any sort of crescendo or high-point anymore; it's been that way ever since, and IMO it lends a lot less impact to the final sequence. This year does have a delay before the music starts though, which is at least different.

What is it with people tagging everything as being 'HD' when the BBC idents will only ever be in SD?

Quite glad last years have returned to BBC2 as they were pretty good
