My all time favourite was the 1999 holographic Santa ident with the BBC One balloon flying by. This was the last time that their Christmas idents aired for only 3 days- compare that with 31 days last year!!
That year,on Holiday Monday (27th December 1999), all Christmas ended. No Christmas pres aired after Boxing Day.
It seemed quite a flat year despite a fabulous ident. I think they switched to Millennium pres straight after Boxing Day.

I'm sure Christmas idents on BBC One/Two were only ever used on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day up until a certain point in time. It feels like a more recent thing that they've been used for the whole of December and New Year's Day.
I think, unless the presentation is a masterpiece, they're shooting themselves in the foot having Christmas idents running all month. By Christmas Day, they're not special anymore and people are bored of them.
Then again, BBC One don't seem too troubled about people growing tired of their idents...
I think last year was the worst decision they made by starting their Christmas idents on 1st December. They seem to think December is Christmas and Christmas is December. If I had my way, the Christmas idents would launch on Saturday 17th December just before the final of Strictly Come Dancing. This won't happen in 2016 and I I have feeling it will either be 1st December again or Saturday 3rd December.
When it comes to what they will do, the BBC are the only ones who bring us a new ident each year (2003 excluded) so it must be tough to come up with new ideas, especially since their current ident package is ten years old.
It's more a promotional device that than a Christmas decoration these days, just like how shops have Christmas decorations torn down on Christmas Eve.
The BBC are promoting their Christmas schedule from 1st December and then come New Years Day they disappear as they are now promoting their new season as the first day of the new year rather than the last day of the holidays

That's also one of my favourite years for Christmas presentation on BBC1 and BBC2, although everything from 1991 up to and including 2000 was fantastic.
I'd say that idents should debut on the last Saturday before Christmas Eve and then run up to and including New Year's Day. Never gonna happen like that again though.

Partly just for practical reasons - the idents used to be physical models which tied up one of the presentation studios, so they could do it for a few days over the Christmas period when demand on the pres studios was lower, but longer term it wasn't possible.
Once it was feasible to play the ident from a recording of some kind (without tying up an expensive VT machine and operator) the need to restrict it to just a few days disappeared.

Interesting stuff, Steve
I think the last year that BBC1 and BBC2 used physical models was 1985. It wasn't until 2000 that the idents started to be shown before Christmas Eve. From 2001 onwards, they were shown up to (and in some years including) January 1st. The "bouncing pudding" idents of 2004 were used up until closedown in the early hours of January the 4th!
