With all the predictability of Greece voting for Cyprus at Eurovision, we're back to W*nkness (whoops, I mean Oneness. No, I was right the first time...) Ugh.

I would be quite happy right now if planet Earth exploded.

Is this going to be a new trend - "Your announcer Jenny" (or whoever) as I've just heard at the 9am junction? Thought it was just a one-off for the New Year's Eve programming... maybe not.

Actually thinking about it, I wonder if the namecheck only occurs at the start of a shift? There was no namecheck going into Shaun The Sheep... Might be why I haven't noticed it if a presenter shift starts when I'm not watching.

I’ve never understood why they go back to normal idents after Midnight on New Years Day, it seems bizarre. Does Christmas end the minute Big Ben chimes?

I’m also not sure why they don’t air the Christmas idents today either. Today is still part of the holiday and has some of the biggest festive shows airing.

I think it stems from when they did ‘Love 20xx’ idents which made sense to start on NYD, and they’ve just carried it on.

Now they aren’t doing that, surely 6am on the 2nd is more appropriate to go back to normal?

They did it even before the 'Love' ident packages - wasn't NYD a classic time for a new Circles ident to launch? I distinctly remember Helicopter launching on NYD 2008, and there might have been others, too.

During the circles era, we had the 2 excellent "winter" idents in January 2015 which were simple but very effective- and so much better than the "Love 2013/2014" January idents in those respective preceding years, I wasn't keen on those. I think the 2015 ones were used through the whole of January for each junction except before the news.

The last time I recall a BBC One Christmas ident still being shown on New Years Day was the "Consider Yourself" package from Christmas 2011. The Christmas ones were used up until early evening on January 1st 2012. By 7pm, the normal ones were back. I remember Duncan Newmarch saying something like "Hang on! Where's the Christmas cake gone?"

Yeah I remember that too, it was just before an extended EastEnders for Pat Butcher's exit I believe.

Capes I think was the ident.

I thought at the time it was an odd junction to end the Christmas pres on...

It’s funny though how every single other day of the year, the ‘TV day’ ends at the end of the schedule, when they handover to the News Channel.

Except on NYE, when it ends at Midnight. There is really no reason why they don’t still use Christmas idents on NYD, unless they are launching a new look or some special new year presentation.

I agree. New Years Day is still very much a part of the holiday season, as is 2nd Jan in Scotland and occasionally 2nd or 3rd is a bank holiday in the rest of the UK too, depending on the day of the week NYD falls on. It would make more sense to return to normal pres on the first “normal” weekday after new year.
