Much deserved - shows the audience is there for something new and the other ratings show how without such a show BBC1 has been failing half its audience on Christmas Day for years.

A revival of a ten year old series, "something new"?

Um, Gavin and Stacey started in 2007...

The trouble is the BBC don't particularly have options for next year. As much as we may want to know what happens next I don't want to see Gavin and Stacey go the way Only Fools and the Royle Family did.

Having had a couple of years off the main day I suspect Doctor Who might return next year. Mrs Brown should end next year IIRC - they might opt to air the final ep on Christmas Day rather than New Years Day. Other than that can't see where anything "new" or "special" would come from.

Strictly is getting earlier and earlier every year though so perhaps the Queen will do it next year to avoid having a speech. I suspect though it would rate better at 3.10 than 4.40, and perhaps the big kids movie being a little later would work better for families too.

Nobody likes a pedant. Clearly it's something different in terms of the Christmas Day lineup.

If you take away the extraordinary share for Gavin and Stacey, the trend for declining viewership continues.

If anyone logs onto TV Forum today to brag about how they didn’t watch TV yesterday, you will receive an eye roll emoticon.

A 97% full PVR isn't just for Christmas..... 😎

I'm not saying people have to watch TV on Christmas Day. I'm just saying, don't come on here and brag about how superior you are because you didn't watch TV. My post was not referring to your good self, by the way!

It’ll be a Miranda revival Christmas special. You wait.

I knew the TV landscape had changed somewhat, but not by quite that much. They are dreadful viewing figures compared to what the main channels could have expected about 30 years ago.

It will be interesting to see the total figures once people have downloaded from iPlayer etc.

Oh, I realised that.

A huge amount has changed in the last 30 years. Back then there was no internet, smartphones, tablets, dvrs. Computers were in their infancy, computer games were primitive and VCRs were just beginning to make their way onto the market. Expect significant bumps in ratings with delayed viewing.

Last night’s Gavin & Stacey pulled in 11.5m (peaking at 12.3m) - the biggest Christmas Day ratings for over a decade.

That’s not a particularly high bar.

My children now are at the same age I was during the late 80s so, really the golden age of Christmas telly.

I don’t think they watched anything on linear on Christmas Day other than the Queen after dinner which is a real pity. (I usually watch the queens speech in the morning, just before I head off to the homeless shelter).

If the BBC or ITV can’t think of any original programmes to have during Christmas Eve/day/Boxing day they should just cram the schedule with decent family films- there are so many l, even if they are holder.

Who can’t remember a Christmas watching Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Back to the Future or similar growing up?
