I actually love that promo. I’ll go and hide somewhere...
It's fine to love it - it's just not reflective of BBC One at Christmas. The Youtube video only has 135K views compared to last year's promo which got almost a million and a half views. I guess last year's has been online for a year but I can't see it getting much more.
I think that'll be enough for them to change the tone next year. Oneness or not they need to cheer up.
It’s a promo that should have aired away from Christmas. It isn’t Christmassy enough, the ending isn’t bright and breezy enough, and the idents are mostly quite dark and depressing.
We will be heading into the big Christmas Day shows with a view of a cold dull day at the seaside. It’s quite odd.
They’ve got carried away making a ‘lovely film’ without taking a step back and asking if it was right for Christmas.

There's other reasons for that
I remember a lot of outrage in some circles over the fact the main character wasn't white.
It's quite odd because you'd expect a lot of things from a fairground setting - warm orangey colours contrasting with the night, lots of buzz, excitement, entertainers shouting into the crowds, etc.
To go in a direction where time literally stands still with a muted colour palette and keeping the audience at a distance is an unusual choice given the setting.
They are going to be linking into the big Christmas highlights with a scene of a mum and son on a dodgem. If you haven’t seen the promo how is it Christmassy?
