BBC One Christmas 2018

1st December. Split from Christmas Idents 2018 (November 2018)

ITV basically gave up on Christmas from 1993 and really never recovered their love for it.

What, all regions gave up together in 1993?

By that point it was all centrally scheduled and commissioned. The regions rarely did their own thing on Christmas day and it was all networked by 1993

Back on topic and we got a breakdown slide, same as the promo style: *

We had been discussing presentation and idents at the time I posted, rather than scheduling.

After the lovely images we've had on the endboards of BBC One's Christmas trailers over the last few years, I can't help but feel a little disappointed at this year's image. Why have they felt it necessary to go back to the red theme again? It doesn't even fit in with the idents or the main promo film.

Because it's cheap and easy and it seems that the bulk of the energy/budget went on the mini-film masterpiece that will be shown for approx a week then never seen again?

Last year's surrounding presentation was lovely, mind.

Agreed, as was 2014 (the coloured trees against the night sky) and 2015 (the lanterns). The orange endboards in 2016 weren't so good IMO.

Once again, this is only my opinion. My opinion. That is what a TV Forum is for.

Love Actually, would be a great film, but not for prime time Christmas night, when you would expect something new from ITV, instead a repeat of a film. Channel 4 or 5 would seem fine, but on ITV, no sorry, just laziness.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinions, just like every other TV Forum member... but with the very, *very* greatest of respect, you really should try to express these opinions in a way that will *not* aggravate others and make them reply with things like, "What a load of tosh you're saying."

And that includes trying to use words and terms other than "not bothered", "pathetic" and "just lazy". These particular words and terms *can* be harsh sometimes. Remember, the written word *does* have its drawbacks compared to the spoken word.

All that said, we're *all* guilty sometimes of letting our guard down and saying or typing the wrong words or terms without really thinking. If we were all perfect, life would be boring - and indeed, if all TV Forum members were perfect, TV Forum probably wouldn't be very interesting either.

I can't help speaking my mind, and being honest in my opinion. If this comes across as aggressive, well I am sorry for that. I am passionate about certain things, and television presentation, and television history is something I have been studying and following and enjoying for many years.

It does, unfortunately, come across as being a tad aggressive now and again... but then many of us are guilty of that sometimes too. Embarassed Wink

And to be fair, being honest in one's opinions and not annoying others with these opinions can occasionally be a tricky balancing act. (Except, of course, for people like P**rs M*rg*n, who *deliberately* annoys others with *his* opinions and loves every moment of it.)

And I don't think there's anyone here on TV Forum who isn't at least mildly passionate about television presentation and history. Otherwise, why would there be so much detailed discussion and so many opinions of Christmas idents and schedules - and so, so much more? Laughing Smile Wink Wink Wink

Nice to see they've made that graphic as full of Christmas cheer as BBC One's actual Christmas idents.

With the same production value.

Two of the creators of this year’s film were interviewed on BBC Breakfast this morning around 7:45. Naga seemed to catch them both off guard when she asked something along the lines of ‘why do bbc one need to make a film when people will be watching over Christmas no matter what’.

Simple answer- they don't need to, however for the last 4 Christmases, it seems to have become the done thing for BBC One. While I don't object to these mini-films per se, my main gripe is that the associated idents can come across as something of an after-thought.
