Loads of background chatter on the CA coming up link after CBBC.

I've heard background noises for a split second at the start of many BBC 1 CAs over the last week.
Sounds as if the booth monitoring speakers, are not muting fast enough when the mic is opened ?

Isn't this part of the audio for the idents/stings? It sounds like party chatter to go with the party scenes in the Consider Yourself house.

The noise is definitely part of the programme caption slides. They brought noises in on those a few years back, as they had one based on each ident.

You'll notice that NI are not using the 'chatter' sound FX, but a cut of the music from the ident instead.

A good example - during this menu, the background chatter plays behind the announcer.

...which they did with last year's too, if I remember rightly.

I could be mistaken, but aren't the Christmas idents here a bit early this year? I'm pretty sure, in the past, they didn't appear much before a week or so before Christmas Eve.

Until around 1998 they wouldn't appear until around sunset on Christmas Eve itself - and would then be taken down again after closedown on Boxing Day.

Not quite true.

It was only 1989 and 1990 when bbc1 and bbc2's christmas idents launched on the evening on christmas eve. From 1991 until 1999, they started on christmas eve from start-up in the morning. Then in 2000, they started on the evening of 22nd December and have been starting them gradually earlier ever since.

Occasionally in the 1980s and 1990s the idents would run beyond Boxing Day if there were any bank holidays after it.

Correct.

Only 1989 & 1990 had the Christmas idents appear on the evening. I remember thinking where they were when I tuned in on Christmas Eve morning. And we only had them for two and a half days! Booooo!

Incidentally, I think 1994 was the first year the Chistmas idents went past Boxing Day. Need to check that one.

I would imagine in the current climate it's a lot easier to justify spending on something you're going to get a months use out of than a fe w days. Also most people will have decorations up by atleast the 10th, as will shops and radio stations will be playing Christmas music, so why shouldn't a TV channel do the same?

Yes, that's what I assumed. It makes it sound like the announcer is in a pub

Well, I can't believe it's deliberate, but then again I suppose I can.

Incredible !!!

Different boxes have different delays due to processing and decoding the digital signals. Some do this more quickly than others.

Indeed, and satellite latency will differ to DTT's

A bit late with this one, but there's also the differing timings of different regions on satellite to consider. I'm not sure how much of that is deliberate and how much is down to all the different transmission chains, but I was told it's helpful to statistical multiplexing if otherwise identical channels are offset from each other in time.
