Imaginative? They were cheaper and boring. imo
Personally, I felt the dancers' efforts were much better than Snowball in the circles era - they were much more fun and puddings I felt was particularly imaginative.

I don't think of many people that would have thought of space-hopper Christmas puddings. Hence the claim for imagination.

So the BBC blocks that we've seen flying in on the trailers continue here. Has anybody seen these short trailers featuring the blocks on TV yet?

If we're talking about the circles [non programme related] idents, I'd have to say it's still the penguins... which will probably be the news ident this year. As for gimmicky idents, I think Who has topped the list.

Although I am a Doctor Who fan and really like this ident, I would prefer a generic ident.

Out of the 3 used in the dancers era, I prefered the Snowflakes and Puddings, the 2005 tree one was just weird and I wasn't a fan
In the circles era, the worst one for me was the Penguins, what has Penguins got to do with Christmas?. I did like last years though.
Regarding this year's ident. It is too Doctor Who. I feel it may alienate non-Doctor Who fans who would feel excluded from Christmas on BBC1. A non-programme specific ident would be better IMO. Last year's was ok because it featured animated characters (well claymation or whatever) which just about gets away with it. I think David Tennant's facial expressions straight to camera may get a tad annoying by 1st January.
One thing I miss thesedays are the regional branded versions used before the regional news. In the old days Look North used to keep the ident music playing over the wide shot of the studio and the presenters intro before the headlines. This always sounded odd at Christmas.

I guess it's more the light hearted notion of Penguins liking ice that much that they'd come invade an ice rink.... plus ice/snow is related to winter and christmas, and penguins kinda live around it, so there are links between the two other than comical ones. But like I say, the light hearted-ness is obviously the most important thing as apposed to realism.

I'm not a fan of Doctor Who, it's just one of those programmes I don't get, so for me, this Christmas ident is a bit poor. It just feels like an advert for the show. I'm sure the Radio Times will love it, though, they get wet knickers at the sight of anything Doctor Who related.

I guess the success of the product allows it, cause let's be honest, it's the one programme on the BBC that doesn't need any advertising at all. So really the idents are a celebration of David Tennant's version of The Doctor before Matt takes over on New Year's Day.

Has anyone heard what the other programme related idents will be over Christmas - or is Doctor Who the only one? Earlier in the thread it was mooted that there would be others, but no news yet?

53 million viewers couldn't give a stuff about that.
Also you've just admitted that it's primarily a celebration of Dr Who rather than a celebration of Christmas time.
