They've never released an ident online nine days before it's due to air before have they??

The ident is a load of sycophantic, self-indulgent **** and I have nothing else to say about the matter.

True, but I guess it's symptomatic of the programme- the ident, that is, not (necessarily) the comment given. I suppose the message from the ident, though, is that there's not a whole package of worthwhile programmes over Christmas, just one, or, at least, it's more worthwhile than all the others. (And if you don't find that to be the case, you're not going to feel particularly well disposed towards the rest of the output.)

Personally, I'd prefer a simpler, generic ident- they wear a lot less, anyway- with more time, effort and money going in to trailers, menus (remember them, when there was a series of programmes worth trailing ?) and programmes. It seems to get forgotten, and it's probably not a popular thing to state on a forum such as this, but presentation is supposed to have us focus on the programmes, rather than on the presentation itself.

Aaaah getcha, thought you compared the W&G ident to the paper snowflakes of last year.

The thing is I absolutely love BBC2's paper cutout and part of me is glad I can see it again so I can record it a few more times. But to have it so many years in a row is a shame.

And as much as I love the Doctor Who ident I had a similar idea with it featuring Father Christmas. I'm one of those people that would like to see Santa back in the idents. The last time BBC1 had Santa was 2000 I think.

Yes, it's probably past time. I think the 1999 ident was the most successful (contemporaneously) of the last 30 years.

When will the BBC realise, we don't all like Doctor Who and we'd rather it didn't grace us with it's presence. It has no place in a BBC One ident. I'd rather Jeremy Clarkson riding the sleigh than David Tennant. Just stick to Christmas rather than Doctor Who. In my view this was a bad decision by the BBC and should never have been considered.

It really is a stunning piece of work and I also think it would have been a waste to show it only once. Course I can't think where they got the idea from Wink

Or should that be where Metro got their idea from? Wink (which is a nice theme btw)

It's probably best if they don't, really. I suspect they'd probably make it a 3D CGI Santa, a-la Coca-Cola.

I prefered the Christmas idents from the dancing era (and they were annoying) to the recent circle efforts. Snowball had snow and a few lights. Penguins had penguins and a few lights. Runaway Sled had lots of snow. This year we have yet more snow and some reindeer. When was the last time it really snowed before or during Christmas in the UK?

And what did the BBC respond with when you complained to them?

Rolling Eyes 2002: kids dressed as snowflakes prancing around in snow. 2003: repeat showing of Snowflakes. 2004: kids on pudding space-hoppers bouncing on snow. 2005: 'Dance with the Tree' package featuring yet more kids in daft costumes and yep, wouldyacreditit, snow!

Say what you like about the Christmas Circles but there really is no comparison between them and the first two Dancer-themed idents. The 2005 ident was an improvement but still not in the same league as this year's in my opinion. I think the 2009 ident is very reminiscent of the Balloon era efforts in terms of production values.

And I'm no Doctor Who fan.

Both of Which were designed by children as part of Blue Peter competitions.

I'm fairly certain only the 2004 ident was designed by the winner of a Blue Peter competition, not that it has any relevance to my point. The point is snow has been a common feature in BBC One idents long before the Circles.
