Never seen that before. The CA started introducing Sports Personality with the new Doctor Who ident, but carried on speaking as picture switched to a shot of the Sheffield Area.

They've done in the past couple of year and for things like the BAFTA's IIRC.

Saves employing a Voice Over at the event too.

The way the audio faded out was a bit messy for me, for a second I thought that the CA had overshot his announcement, but then realised what was going on.

BBC North used to do that every night http://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/dsplus/m.php?p=bbclooknorth1997.rm

It was a wonderful remix of the classic Tyne Tees theme. One I've never been able to get hold of much to my annoyance.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't the Network North set that preceded this identical to Central South at the time?

Calendar's most famous theme was pretty good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr8jcKaQTWg
or the earlier arrangement http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4_KY-seq24 which also had a full version used as the start up http://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/dsplus/m.php?p=yorkshirestartup80s-v2.rm

Look North (Leeds) has had some good themes over the years too.

At UTV, for oov links, the announcer has no control over mic or ident levels, or even a set of cans to pop on their ears.

Why would they not have headphones? Do they at least have an earpiece for talkback? I'm amazed they're not crashing the intro to shows all over the place!

They also do in-vision links from the same studio, with no "booth" for the out of vision links, hence no headphones.

No earpiece as far as I could see either... though there is talkback via a panel with a speaker. They don't get a vocal cue from the director/TC... they just start to speak when the mic live light comes on, when the director/TC opens the mic. They don't get a count out/stop talking, or a count in to the start of the programme.
