Brilliant news ident. Shows a darker sky and a logo formation (usual circle formation).

Simple and classy into the news. I like it. Shame there isn't another ident, I can see people complaining about the same Who ident being shown endlessly.

Exactly- the more particular an ident is, the more tiresome it can become. (It's like having the same joke retold and retold and retold...) I'm sure that some viewers are already becoming tired of the Doctor Who ident, which is fine as a one-off and would have been acceptable (though not my personal preference) in t'olden days when the ident was on-air for 3 days, rather than 3 weeks.

I think this is why people liked the ITV1 ident from last year. It was simple but effective and, for me anyway, it never got old.
With the BBC One idents, like you said, they are like the same joke being told over and over.
I remember last year, when I first saw the W&G ident I loved it, by christmas day I was fed up of seeing it before every program, and I think it will be exactly the same this year.

If they used it along side the two variants of the penguins ident (with and without the christmas tree) and the snowball ident, this would be perfect.

I think a relatively simple generic Christmas ident from about 20-31 December and then a similarly simple New Year one up to the 6th January is the way to go. There would have to be an obvious new season of programmes in January, though, and, unfortunately, we have long been in an era where the idents (at least on BBC1) are varied and the style of trailers and programmes themselves are not- which is perverse.

I've stated it a few times, but what people seem to forget is that presentation should be about framing or highlighting programmes, not drawing attention to itself and distracting/detracting from programmes.

To be fair, and being serious, I think the creative potential of the BBC One Christmas idents is being held back somewhat by the fact that they must be centred around the idea of creating the shape of a circle in some way. But that doesn't excuse the fact that they could've used Santa Claus and a proper sleigh in this ident. Hopefully there'll be a brand new set of idents either next year or the year after, which won't have such a rigid set of standards that have to be adhered to when it comes to Christmas time.

As much as I love Doctor Who and this ident, the idea of Santa flying his sleigh and forming a circle over a snowy city underneath is an idea that I have had for ages and I hope they will do. I think the circle idents have been far more adventurous and creative than the dancers but it isn't really a logo. The 'BBC One' is the logo and it seems very ordinary without a circle around it. The 'BBC One' should always have a circle around it.

Quite agree.

Concepts, like the circles one, are by and for media types- OK, yah!- and are not best placed as part of BBC1 presentation.

The problem with BBC1's current set is not that of the circle, the circle does sort of work, especially now they've ditched some of the stupider idents such as that horrid one with the flats.

No the problem is BBC1's utterly incompetent timing that ruins the whole thing. You have these great long idents that are never allowed to play out properly and then end up with nasty badly done cuts and why exactly?

Where the blame lies I'm not sure, I know some would blame the announcers / directors / automation but its probably more due to marketing trying to cram so many trailers into the same junction and not realising that sometimes a menu can save time and promote more.

Channel 4 manage to fit their lavishly long idents, menus, promos and adverts into the gaps without this problem so why the BBC is incapable / unwilling to do so is beyond me.

Exactly. I just can't see the logic at all in airing it so early - even the 19th next Saturday would probably be considered too early by many of us, but at least that's in the Christmas fortnight. Also a shame the concept is basically the same as last years.

I don't agree the circle is too restrictive - indeed it's possibly the least restrictive concept they've ever had - it's pinning them to one programme which makes it restrictive. The best route at Christmas is to create a collection you can build upon every year.

And completely agree with what Hymgumba said before me.

I've always wondered why it is that Channel 4 announcers can hit the queue every single time whereas on BBC1 they just seemed incapable of doing it; and the problem got so bad that they had to redit them. These wonderful idents are great to look at and then they just cut out the best bits and ruin the music.

They even mess up the edited short versions now though, by talking straight away or waiting 10 seconds

You would think that over the years Peter Offer would learn how to use a desk fader. He is without doubt the worst at getting the balance right between voice and music.

Just caught an ident now and completely ruined by the announcer not waiting until the formation of the circle to speak.

Also only caught the end of it but someone from the BBC bringing out the usual responses in response to complaints about credit squeezing and talking over credits on Points of View, stating they have to get the information across and technology doesn't allow them to give viewers more control over it. Thing is we all know it does - it's called an EPG!.

On being shown alternative ECP ideas submitted by viewers which didn't squeeze the picture, he dismissed them with a wave of his hand saying that there were "technical reasons" why they couldn't work - such as, "the way some credits scroll up/are placed on screen would be covered up".

Isn't it down to his department to set the credit guidelines - precisely so they *do* work with ECPs etc?

Pretty disgraceful bare faced lie, I thought. He really had an air of contempt about him.
