Where's everyone being seeing these breakbumpers then? I timer recorded every single daytime junction over the past week in a last ditch attempt to catch some, and how many did I see? ONE!! In the whole week! And that was a fairly boring close-up one that I've already got! I haven't seen any of the more interesting ones like these for ages and ages:

They should have used those as idents!

The breakbumpers have been criminally underused over the last 5 years. They should have been a bigger part of the corporate branding.

Some more hints about the new look due over Easter......

The first image is for a trailer for a new series, the second is from the Easter promo and the final picture is from last week's 'Rescue Me' trailer.

The 'Rescue Me' trailer I suspect was a mistake on the BBC's part - the previous week's trailer, as well as this week's one don't have the text in the top left. This was commented on before, but as it seems to have been a one off I wouldn't mind betting that's where the text on promos will be in the new look.

I though the Easter promo's 'blue halo' type effect was also a one off, but the trailer shown today for the new series has a similar effect, this time in red.

Just remove the 'B|B|C ONE' from the bottom centre of the screen and insert the red box in the bottom left (in the 4:3 zone) and I suspect you'll have the new look. No help for guessing what the idents will look like, though! Sad

On Friday that Easter promo probably won't be much different, probably just the red box in the bottom right and maybe THE ONE added somewhere!

We've already seen the new look trailer style (barring any last minute changes):

Putting the text in the top left would be pretty useless as it would clash with the DOG when shown on BBCs Choice, Four or News 24!

i think that confirms my belief that BBC ONE's colour scheme will be blue and red!

if the red box is red, the background colour in the idents should be blue, as red is the complimentary colour to blue, as purple is the complimentary colour to yellow.

i am looking forward to the new look, but the balloons will always remain in my mind, as that was what started my interest in TV Pres!

Anyone else remember that the BBC ONE bumpers started off in the same style as the BBC Worldwide and UKTV breakbumpers? i.e. in a small sqare over a black background with no soundtrack, like the current BBC WORLD breakbumper but without the channel logo at the bottom. Same as the original NEWS 24 one too, flags in a square surrounded by black.

They contained close-up shots of the balloon, and lasted a very very short amount of time before they were replaced by the full-screen ones we know now. I've not been able to find them anywhere online.

I'm not sure if BBC TWO started off in the same way, or used it's familiar full-screen ones from the start. It would seem likely that they would have been in the 'small square' same style, but I just never remember seeing it on BBC TWO.

I am personally dreading this re-launch, not because im going to miss the balloons. But because every recent rebrand has been a complete bloody failure!!!

Its this 'simplistic' fashion that seems to be in circulation around corporate designers everywhere.

Look at sky one, the 1998-2002 look was versatile, fresh and modern. What do they change them with, something that looks like it came of a commodore 64. I fear the same for BBC One, or should I call it 'the one' (ROFL)... how original.

Thats the trouble, Idents have been taken as far as they can, and untill the next major technological breakthrough, you cannot get much more modern than the idents we already have.

I also do have a slight dread of what is coming - because unlike the BBC2 relaunch last November, there still hasn't even been as much as a hint to what the idents will look like - and we all seem to be assuming they will have a 'lifestyle' theme. Perhaps instead we'll end up with something like this: (RealMedia Clip, 12KB)

I do however think we are seeing an end to 'established' identities.  I really can't see the current crop of 2's lasting more than 12 months because frankly they look viale, and even BBC 4 I can see having seasonal changes even if they keep the current live computer generated things, with perhaps the colour scheme changing for each season.

Prior to the current 'ballons' the last two sets of BBC1 presentation had lasted six years, the ballons have lasted slightly longer than four - which I must admit, at first when I wasn't so sure about them, I thought would perhaps last until around October 2000 before being replaced - so I guess I wasn't that far off.  But from now on I wouldn't be surprised to see the look of the BBC channels being 'refreshed' every year - Choice seems to have something new each month already...

And it's got people in it... Seems to fit....

Oh they couldn't, could they? Sad

instead of taking a step forward maybe we need to take two steps back and use some of the idents of the 70's and 80's but bring them kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

imagine a modernized 'stripy 2' or 'COW' or 'blocky ITV ident' or 'block 4'.

i think tv needs to go retro if they want to advance.
