have a quick sting or ident before the opening headlines are read, then a quick ident after then into the studio.
It has been done like that on sky news since well a long time, and i think its whats needed as BBC News (on bbc one) is a tad boring and mundane.

Well the one I saw didn't have a globe in it, but there are bound to be a few others, there might be one somewhere
That's realy nice. I wonder how an up to the hour system would be implameneted on that though. Plus the headlines would kind of take the edge off the headline sequence in the programme.
Where did you get that background from BTW?
PLUS - OT: Has anyone seen the new n24 weeknights trail wtih the '24' arseing about like normal but in a worldy style background? Very nice. Come on N24, get a mini tart up

Does anyone have the last virtual globe closedown (3 Oct 97)?
Asa, I saw that trailer on Thursday night - must record it this week! Seeing as I finally have a proper VCR and digital box now, I'll be taping ALL-DAY Thursday, and ALL-DAY Friday, with my E300 tapes in Long Play!
Oops, and happy birthday TV Forum, for yesterday - my phone was down yesterday, dangit!
They'd never use that because it isn't serious enough.
As for the theory of a digital clock, it could happen. The thing is we wouldn't have the seconds. if only digital could be speeded up a bit. and less compressed, and the signal boosted.

Does anyone know how they will leave the balloon?? just run an extended one or something nice?
I don't know, but have you noticed they've suddenly been using a much more varied selection of idents over the past few days? Instead of the same old ones, there's lots being shown that haven't appeared too often lately. Also, I've noticed in the idents where the announcers are supposed to start talking at the very beginning (as opposed to the ones with a louder jingle at the start) they're waiting a few seconds to start. This morning I heard the music from the one at Canary Warf (stationary shot, DLR train goes past) properly for the first time since the balloons started!
If the BBC One idents are too 'lifestyle' for the style to be used as a background for a clock, how about using a BBC News style clock (i.e. cream/china red etc..)?? Wouldn't look out of place at all...
