I wouldn't be surprised if the clock goes - means they don't have to hit 1800 and 2200 dead on time without anyone noticing
The clock is allready being phased out - it's now generally only run before main news programmes (smaller bulletins being introduced with standard idents), and I think in 9/10 cases that it appears, it's just a 1 minute recording of a certain time being played out like an ident. The times when the actual live clock is shown are now very rare indeed (if at all). The fact that BBC2 relaunched without a clock (and already seemed to have discontinued the old one a couple of years before the relaunch) I think makes it even less likely that the clock will be back.
This is really sad, what I particularly like about the clock is that's is so nice. If you really look at station clocks, an awful lot of them are ugly as hell (like the old BBC one where the markers got progressively thicker - what the hell was that supposed to be?). The current BBC Clock is one of the few that actually look nice. And the warm balloons background added in 1997 have improved it more.
I have never been a big fan of the balloons - until now. Right now, any channel which talks about 'getting in touch with people' through their idents usually means one thing; stupid live action shots of nothing in particular with a channel logo stamped onto it. And the current channel logos, being just a box with a stupid tiny BBC logo and stupid large channel name, are awful.
I'd much rather have the balloons, than a shot of someone selling ice cream or whatever with 'BBC ONE' in a red box in the bottom left hand corner. Does anyone REALLY want to see this on BBC One? It's pretty much the same as E4 do! I think even the ITV blue spinning hearts are better than that.
