Is it only Bikes and hippos which have long versions?

And Surfers, which never got a cut-down version but rather they just stuck the BBC One logo on throughout (I assume this is because the circle is only on screen for a few seconds).

I haven't seen Surfers for a while though? Is it still used?

Yes, but it's played rarely.

There is the longer edit of the current Helicopter - ISTR that's a Northern Ireland-only edit.

Has the ident been changed to have close up of people looking at the bikes in the rain? Kid in a car, man looking over the bikes...

anyone seen this? When did it change.

The long version (as you can see in Jonny's link of the refreshed long version, and as others have pointed out), contains the footage you describe, and, as the long version was used for the ident’s first TX, you could say it’s the version that's been used on-air the longest. Unfortunately, when it was refreshed, (as you can see in the link) it results in the less than ideal shot of the man’s face on the balcony being obscured by the BBC One logo. That's just my opinion, though, and others may not think it's any big deal.

In case anyone’s interested, I did contact Matt Losasso, director of the Capes ident, a little while back, to ask him how it came to be that the puddle (at about the 4 o’clock position after form-up) appears to go semi-transparent for a few seconds, which results in cyclists appearing to ride underneath, or ‘through’, this puddle. I know this will be viewed by most as a very minor oversight (you have to be very eagle-eyed to spot it), but I was interested in any comments he could give about how it might have happened. He replied to me, with some interesting feedback:

Hi Mr Page,

Thank you for you interest. I will try my best to explain how this may have come about.

The Capes ident was not created entirely in post. We chalked out the spiral in a car park and had 80 cyclists in four coloured teams follow the pattern while it was filmed from high above. These cyclists were then replicated 3 times and the buildings and roundabout were added in post. The puddle, was in fact, really there but as the extra cyclists were added, it appears that two or three of them don't seem to be keyed in correctly, causing the effect you have so keenly spotted.

The post is always made with a deadline as it is an expensive process, and although this error had been noticed it was after it had been sent to air and considered too minor to fix, so sadly it will have to always remain like that, but thank you for this observation.

I hope that helps to answer your query.

Best wishes
Matt

That's really interesting, I never actually noticed that until you pointed it out. You can just about make it out on the YouTube video, but it'd be interesting to see on HD channel.

The long version of Capes tends to be shown before Question Time, so you might see it tomorrow night.

Very occasionally the long version of Bikes is shown on BBC 1 Scotland, but it's the least shown I'd say.

Just to clarify:

Surfer, Capes Long, Bikes Long and Hippos Long are all in use on Network. I like to use them where possible. I think it is a shame that they didn't retain all of the "long" version of idents to be used alongside the shorter versions. I think some have lost the story since being shortened, for instance Lawn really doesn't have the same impact since the Stepford Wives element has little chance to develop like it did.

Yep, same with Mission Control and Dogs. I loved the music with the original Dogs ident as well.

The best was the full length Helicopter ident, with the original soundtrack. Probably not suitable for the audience, but it was a beautiful piece, and had some weight and wonder to it.

I agree, the long version, with its haunting original soundtrack, had real gravitas and, therefore, was appropriate for very serious programming, unlike now, where there is currently no BBC1 ident in use which is truly appropriate for such programming.

Here's an extended long version (never broadcast). Enjoy!

Moon was also excellent for sombre/later programming. I think it was withdrawn (alongside Windows?) before the shortening though.

Incidentally whilst looking through clips for this thread I came across Imran Hanif's YouTube channel (he composed the original 2006 idents). Several of the tracks are slightly different from the final versions https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqeA2fqUhUZ5VzqyP7mJ7qA .

Capture of the puddle

In the image linked to above, the cyclist in light blue has gone over the puddle, whereas the green cyclist is going under it.

Yes, I've seen them before. Just a shame Imran didn't upload them in better quality Sad
