If my calculations are correct, today is the day that the current BBC1 circle idents overtake the dancers (1653 days), having already outlasted the balloon idents on 1st April (1637 days).

I think the circle idents have fared a lot better than their immediate predecessors, and still seem pretty fresh to me, particularly after the 2009 refresh (which I liked even though seemingly no one else did!) I hope they stick around for the foreseeable future, which seems likely since I don't think a costly new presentation package would go down very well at this time of severe cutbacks at the BBC!

I still think the circles are great. Probably because there are so many of them and we still get a new one here and there. I personally think that the best way to keep the package fresh would be to mix in the originals with the newer edited versions and bring in a couple of new ones. The rhythm & movement idents had better music but they just seemed to age quicker.

And as you say with cutbacks launching a new logo will be seized on by the anti-BBC press so they must be safe for awhile yet.

Ironic to think then, if the BBC ONE 1997 Balloon idents came back unchanged onscreen in 2011, they'd still look WAY better than those dancer ones!

But just like with car design (where conservative looking, 'boring' cars usually age better than their more radical looking counterparts), the Balloon idents have definitely stood the test of time. And they actually had meaning behind them, bringing them to every corner of the UK. Unlike those moronic PC dancers!

And (dare I say it), better looking than the current set!

The biggest problem with the current idents is that the soundtrack is poor. Somebody has done this which demonstrates how much better the Balloons music was

The circle idents don't look as stale as the dancers did when they were axed.

However it must surely be time for a new look? Perhaps next year in time for London 2012?

Not sure what theme they would have for a new look though...?

If no new look then some new regular idents (rather than one-off / limited run ones) would be nice. Smile

The beauty of the circle is that it's a simple, basic, universal symbol. There's no reason why it shouldn't last as the theme/logo for a long time

There's nothing special about them to me, they're just average really.

Well, you couldn't ask for a better theme as the basis for an Olympics ident than the current set's...

I'd like to see them return to the kinds of effort and craftsmanship that went into the initial 06-09 set. It's a shame the little details such as the varying swirl colour and the kites, etc. appearing over the logo were lost in the refresh. Minor details yes but they added much to the overall aesthetic. The May 2009 edits have their plus points but this lazy niggle could have been so easily avoided.

Pure speculation but I hope the 2009 BBC One and Two refreshes weren't attempts to deliver "new" presentation to the channels before the axe came down. The results have been mixed at best and I would have preferred the money to have been put towards a whole new campaign further down the line if it was a case of either/or, rather than making do and mending (although in truth there was nothing really to mend).

I think this will be our lot for a while yet due to the customary negative press that accompanies BBC rebrands even in relatively normal circumstances, which is bad news for BBC2 which really needs rebuilding from scratch.

BBC One s'alright though.

Good looking title board there.

I wonder if a modified version of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDtv5Goa3A0 will make an appearance as they're using the same sort of animation on that title board...?

True. BBC2's 2 symbol is now 20 years old, and has survived a change of BBC logo (1997). No reason why BBC1 can't keep the circle theme and even the "one" typeface, while updating the idents every five years or so. Of course, several ITV logos lasted decades too - most notably Yorkshire's chevron and Granada's G-arrow, which both ran from 1968 to 2002.

I would have preferred it if the 1997 idents and logo had been kept, with of course new idents every few years.
