It was basically the problem that the previous set of idents had, the music which accompanies dancing doesn't really go with trying to do a serious announcement.

What happened to the special Bang ident, the one with bikes powering a circle created by light bulbs?

That special ident is still in use, and has been used to introduce Bang Goes The Theory, and The One Show, although not sure if it has been used to introduce any other programmes--I may be wrong on that however. It was shown into the special episode of BGGT the other evening, Bang Goes The Winter Weather.

Last night we had a London and South East ident before Late Kick Off. Were other regions showing other programmes? It's the first time I've seen a London ident used.

Each BBC English Region produces a Late Kick Off programme, although most co-produce it with other neighbouring regions, such as the case in London & South East, although some are independently made. The BBC One London ident is always shown before Inside Out London and any other BBC London Productions opt out from Network, however the BBC One London & South East ident is only shown before Late Kick Off.

Presumably the special ident is because in most other regions need to staff their gallery for the opt, but they can save that cost at Tunbridge Wells by playing out a joint ident on the sustaining feed. Do Redbee play the programme out or is it played from Egton?

I believe most regions use a generic BBC One ident before Late Kick Off - there's certainly no "South, West and South West" variant ident as far as I know. That said, Norwich may use an East branded ident - as their programme is only shown on the two East sub-regions.

Indeed - the dancers were particularly inflexible when it came to introducing something more sombre, with the exception of Ballet, they were all pretty upbeat. The current set of idents was a vast improvement when it first launched, although I feel that the new soundtracks took away some of that flexibility. The old Helicopter soundtrack was far and away more suited to more serious programmes than the current soundtrack. For a long time, Moon was the dedicated ident for sombre occasions, but I think that's been permanently 'rested' (as Marketing like to put it).

I thought that Southampton, Bristol and Plymouth all had to staff their `pres galleries to opt out (Bristol can't do all three at once any more, apparently) so I was assuming that they could each play their own ident before the programme.

I wondered what the hell was going on when it happened - bit of a mess, but funny to hear!
