I can't say I'm too impressed. Though I'm more inclined to think this is more a forward thinking ploy for the next rebrand in a year or two, than anything being done for the current period. The Rhythm and Movement lot had so much difficulty because they were a poor set which followed a strong set in the balloons. On that logic, if you make sure to butcher the current pres package all to hell before a relaunch, you're starting the bar lower so whatever follows will always look better. Laughing

Peter Fincham Controller of BBC1 once said back in 2006:-

Quote:
"In an increasingly competitive marketplace a channel needs to stand out from the crowd and I believe our new identity is just what's needed for BBC One.

"It's set in the everyday but shows people doing extraordinary things. It's got variety and range - everything from daredevil motorbikes to synchronised hippos. It's warm and it's dynamic.

"The circle, which is at the heart of this campaign, has been familiar to BBC One viewers over the years, but what we've got here is modern, forward looking and surprising."

Well, you can certainly say that:-
-todays new shortened idents is just what is NOT needed for BBC1
-No more variety or range - it only lasts for a few seconds now.
-Dynamic? The lack of moving motorbikes/hippos etc for more than 2 seconds does not show much dynamism to me
-Suprising? The acrobatic dogs might as well pack their bags and go back and live in their kennels now their suprising routine has been massacred.

Also - there won't be much point in getting excited for this years BBC1 Christmas Ident will there now? Today has put an end to all that! No point starting a thread in a few months time anticipating what they will do this year as there will no point in having a Christmas ident anymore...

Unbelievable! Rolling Eyes

Has Dogs been shown yet? As you said, it'll be a pretty pointless ident if they cut that down.

Before you reach for the razor blades may I remind you that last year's excellent Christmas ident only had a 4-5 second form-up?

The problem is the changes they have made fly in the face of the original idea behind the Circle idents: people/animals/objects coming together to form a circle. The quirky and compelling opening sequences made these idents, without them they are nothing.

Mission Control was shown before Jonathon Ross this morning. However, as you don't actually get to see the mission control room anymore, maybe it's time for a new name.

Slightly confused by the response here, I think that most of the new edits are alright. The weakest ones (Football and Bikes) are the ones I thought were weakest before anyway. There seems to be more pace now, which was much needed.

Right, the person/people who made this decision to cut the idents into shorter versions need to get a good talking to on how they've just destroyed a perfect package, then be fired.

Seriously, within a day BBC One has destroyed (IMO) one of the best ident packages going around today (along with Channel 4). Living here in Australia, we don't get many channel-related idents - only show-related ones & it's always been interesting to how in the UK, idents really identify a channel from another channel. We all know we're watching BBC One, we've been seeing those idents for a few years now - we don't need the logo to come up earlier, then completely reck the whole purpose of the idents. The whole purpose of the current BBC One idents is to tell a story (like with Helicopter, seeing the helicopter flying in the air, then landing on top of the lighthouse - in which then, the BBC One logo forms), now it's simply a quick film, with some music behind it & no meaning what-so-ever.

Like a few have been saying, Channel 4 gets the formula right - long build-up, the announcer speaks & you still see the '4' going past, camera zooming-in/out, etc & into the next program - BBC One simply has to get the formula right, but instead decide that shorter idents (with no meaning & **** music - I don't like the new music for any of the idents) & the announcer being forced to rush (with longer announcements) is the best way to go.

Shocking BBC One, totally shocking.

Had the idents been made like this originally there would be no argument from most of us on here. The problem is they were made with an interesting sequence that led up to the circke formation. Now they have taken that out of all of them and the fun and originality of these idents has gone with them.

These people should be slapped silly. Wink

Well a longer version of Capes just went out. Most of the original sequence was there, just with the logo forming up very early, long before the circle appears.

They've just shown the whole Capes ident with the new music and the logo forming at the start. It looked bizarre as we had to wait 6 seconds or so for the bit in the ident with the circle while the 'BBC One' was already onscreen. Bizarre looking it was! Shocked

Hideous.

I'm hoping these short idents will only be around for a year at the most, and we'll see a complete rebrand in 2010 with new idents altogether.
