Wow, BBC1 has been pulling out all the stops with terrible-looking Now & Next boards tonight.

They have been slacking lately. It is almost as if they don't care. I have noticed on these slides that the text disappears before the next trailer or ident starts which never happened before.

This happens on Network only I believe and has been going on for the last few months. It started (I think) with the introduction of the additional imagery in the background (e.g., special background for the clocks going forward, and more recently, the addition of visuals from the idents). When they used the simpler red animating background, overlaying the text didn't seem to be such an issue. Now, as you say, it seems to disappear just ahead of the next event. Looks very clumsy.

They didn't start of like that. It is a technical problem that means they now have to done like that until equipment can be upgraded - but does look terrble.

Incredible to see such technical limitations in the playout set-up of one of the country's main TV channels!

If it has to be tolerated for the foreseeable future, perhaps fade the text out (as opposed to cutting). It doesn't look nearly as bad. Just a suggestion.

That's interesting, as all the Nations use exactly the same piece of equipment for generating the Next/Later animations and text overlays - and don't appear to have the same issues, even though there have been no 'upgrades'.

Not really 'interesting'. Yes they all use the same kit, but Network have had other problmes which have meant end credit squeezes have been going to air whilst previewing. Part of the problem was thought to be the way the next/laters are being genereated, this is a temporary solution to the problem.

They are now playing the background video clip for the Next menus off the normal playout servers, then keying the text on via the mixer... rather than the previous way (which the Nations are still using) of playing the background video clip and text straight out of the Clarity as a complete package.

This only started happening on BBC 1 England when a variety of backgrounds were introduced. The Nations went to the bother of recording all of the different clips in to their Clarities (much more time consuming than simply caching the new backgrounds on to the normal playout servers). But yes, I'm sure it's all just a technical problem at Red Bee and that they will soon fix it.

Now... I wonder if BBC 1 will be worth watching from 5:15 this afternoon?

Nope probably not, cos the Weakest Link is on Laughing

Unless there might be something interesting just before it. Maybe an ident?

I was going to say "when was the last time a new ident launched on a Monday?" but then I realised we've seen new additions launch on a Tuesday, Sunday and Friday with this set, so it's perfectly feasible; however, 5:15 seems like a strange choice of junction.

I hope there will be a new ident - having said that, their recent track record in this area isn't promising. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if we got a new DOG instead - not too long 'til we find out, anyway...

Thanks to Denton for the heads-up.

I quite enjoyed that new ident... makes a good attention to the set.
