Do you only have the network idents?

Not sure they really needed to "sub it out" at all - everything except the weather was pre-recorded well in advance, so they should have been able to get copies of those programmes loaded onto their servers well in advance. Pre-record some continuity announcements and build a playlist and you're away.

Or am I greatly simplifying things?

I wouldn't know, having never so much as set foot in a TV continuity suite (sadly; would be fun to look around one someday) but if regions timeshift programmes, then there should ideally be regional continuity during the relevant junctions. Firstly, there's the problem of network plugging programmes that have either been dropped or are now on at a different time. Another purpose is the regional legend (South East, North West, Midlands etc) can give the viewer a hint that there are regional variations afoot and that the programmes and their running order may not necessarily be the same as in TV listings, which are more often than not national these days. All regional studios have continuity suites (bar, I assume, subregions, like Oxford and Cambridge), so surely it can be done, either live or pre-recorded and that the problem is the staff not being used to doing it, rather than it being impossible.

Of course, we also have those promos that come up over the end credits of programmes too. The 'nations' have a proper clean network feed but the 'regions' do not. Ideally, this clean feed would be available for any timeshifted service.

Another sloppy thing I remember is that in the North West (and other northern regions I'm sure) before the Super League Show, a slide would appear informing viewers that Porridge was on in a few minutes. Not good practice, in my opinion.

Were there ever any regional versions of those older Christmas idents, considering that they were mostly models in those days? I'm sure BBC Glasgow can superimpose the word 'Scotland' onto them if needed. Wink

Glasgow created their own idents, and never took the network version until 1990?

You can see some of the Scottish idents here:

Not really, they have galleries which are designed for putting out news programmes. However playing out a series of pre-recorded items isn't that difficult to playing out a news bulletin.

Ideally those programmes would be provided to the region in advance - less to go wrong on the night when there are few staff around if they're already sitting on the server.

An old school "except for viewers in the North who have the SuperLeague Show" would help, or opting out for the whole junction and playing some trails locally.

Often we'd get a quick glimpse of the network ident off the back of a trail, then the (comparably) ropey Scottish Christmas version would appear. It was never as good...

Then Scottish versions of those idents Duncan posted, bar the globe one, don't exist. I doubt he's got any of the ones Glasgow used pre 1990 because he's in London and they're either in Glasgow or in somebody's loft somewhere. Smile

The sentimental touch of network television and a reminder that you Scots are just that little more special that you need your own festive 'thown together in five minutes' Christmas model ident. Good memories, I'm sure. Wink

Glasgow tended to do their own - remember that they working from a dirty network feed back then, so the model sat in PresB would only be available to them during network junctions. Rather than make a replica they designed their own.

@Steve - So regions in England can't do live continuity? They used to have this capability, so when was it removed? I agree that even an "except for viewers in the North" would help but even without live continuity, the could surely, with perhaps help from the network, cobble some pres together in advance and play it out at the relevant time, perhaps including timeshifted programmes like you suggested. It just needs a bit of thought maybe.

@Duncan - nope, too young. I have vague memories of that 1991 one. I was eight at the time. I do remember the COW globe vaguely but none of the Christmas presentation of that era. Sad
