Well, these edits are quite awful.

I understand the reasoning behind it, to get the brand more built up, but the way they have been butchered is almost criminal. What were my favourite idents on tv have just become a mess.

They never should have been cut, the only tweaks should have been:

a) add the hook at the beginning (a la surfer) of all the idents, then hear again when logo forms up.
b) add red swirls around the BBC one logo (as in new ones)

Doing this would make the hook much more prominent (without ruining the music), made the red stand out more.
Then, the announcer should be held until after the logo form and second hook. To make time for this, less adverts and promos should be shown.

Simples?

No.
Really they were needing this 'butchering' and I think its for the best.

I saw 3 FULL story idents, with the logo forming up immediately, but they weren't cut short, they played the full original sequence.

Yup, I've managed to catch Capes and Hippos so far (I take it the third one you're referring to is Surfer?).

The original full cut of Capes was actually a few seconds longer than the revised long/full version (the scene with only green mac cyclists has been cut).

They didn't need the 'butchering' at all. All it's done is made a good brand weak. The circular theme has no meaning to it now, and what's with the red swirl on Hippos? It doesn't go with the blue ocean!

Nowadays there's bound to be some clause somewhere in the Human Rights Act we could sue under.

The brand is now onscreen much longer.

Which surely makes it stronger.

True, but to say it's "almost criminal" is a little OTT don't you think?
