BBC 1 doesn't much have a history of purely CG symbols besides the COW

Purely symbols (graphics/CGI) - 33 years
Live action - 15 years

Sorry, you've lost me with the numbers there...

Perhaps I should point out that 'Symbol' is synonymous with 'Ident' - I use both interchangeably (though more people just stick to the latter - less confusion, evidently!), so the former does not exclusively mean CG.

Symbol could also mean logo. Ident definitely refers to the clips shown before programmes with the logo on them. There is a difference and ident is the better word to use IMHO.

I've never known the symbol to mean the logo over an ident; if anything, it's the opposite - the main ident itself. But I agree, best to call it ident just now, rather than go too far into specifics. If I call them symbols in future, at least you now know exactly what is meant Razz

What I meant was, until 1997, BBC One never had live action idents - until then it had been just a globe, in many different formats. The COW was the first CGI one (don't forget the abstract one after the COW) but before then it had been done with models.

Watching the first episode of Scots on the Box from BBC One Scotland last night, there's a cue dot (small cyan circle) in the top right corner of the screen, visible on the iPlayer also

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01pmc9q/Scots_on_the_Box_Episode_1/

It was there during the preceding junction, and disappears about 10 minutes into the programme. Any ideas what its purpose is?

Also noted last night, that one of the new BBC One HD frequencies on satellite is now showing the Scottish EPG but still broadcasting the network programming.

It's a BBC thing, the Beeb has a history of using different words for all sorts of things to the rest of the industry, and they've always been known as "symbols" at the BBC.

Speaking of which, think there should be something new tonight at about 9ish...

A new ident perhaps? There was a tradition of introducing a new ident after Christmas during the Dancers and the start of the circles.

I'm pretty confident that there will be some new idents. Delicious Digital, the people behind the music on the ITV1 Christmas idents tweeted recently that they would be "swopping channels" to BBC one, working on some new idents to air early 2013. When I tweeted them about it for some more information, their tweet was subsequently deleted. I emailed them as well (the lengths I go to out of curiosity!), but no reply. All very mysterious.

I am guessing it's a themed ident for the 'Africa' series?
