Someone went a bit click happy with the semi-automated Alan Dedicoat on last nights Strictly Come Dancing.

It won't be automated at all, all the phrases will be loaded onto something like a digicart and manually played out

Is this the BBC delivering quality first? Is it cheaper to get Didicoat to record the words...

Of course, getting him in a couple of times a series to record a few phrases costs a lot less than having him sit in a sound booth for several hours every Saturday and Sunday. I never thought he was live

Yup, even some unloved efforts are still there somewhere.

If BBC Two had made a real effort, this set could have been iconic and very memorable, much like the famous 1991/1997 set.

The original set wasn't bad and there's a lot to be said for if they'd went on to use the 2 as a portal (see Mirror) rather than a cut-out, creatively; some degree of potential was there but a lack of versatility in comparison to previous sets and development of the core idea doomed us to 5+ years of blandorama.

And then of course the 2009 incident...

*Must stop discussing BBC2 in BBC One thread*

You seem to have snipped my post and then answered a question that was never asked. I don't think anyone thought Mr. Dedicoat's VO was done live.

My observation was that the recordings were played out at the wrong time. This seemed to reveal that he had recorded "Welcome to Strictly Come Dancing" and "Halloween Special" but not "Welcome to Strictly Come Dancing, Halloween Special".

It just seemed an odd thing to do unless Dedicoat charges the BBC per word.

I thought 'Deadly' was always busy?

Everytime BBC WM have him on for one reason or another, to do with the station's past, he always seems to be 'down the line' from Radio 2, never live in the Birmingham studio, even though he has family here.

Edit - In fact when he is normally on Radio 2 as I've never heard him when the office has tuned in?

Sorry, I was going to address that bit too but forgot Embarassed

I'd have thought it likely that the plan was for two words to be split up by something happening in the studio or another sound effect therefore it was split into 2 to help with timing

For the past few years promotional videos for shows on BBC One have had a 1997-style strip logo, but using the current custom BBC One font:

*

What I've noticed is how badly done it is. The spacing between 'BBC' and 'One' is too wide and the 'One' is far too big. Using a simple image viewing programme on Mac that has a few simple resizing tools, along with the fantastic free image of the BBC One logo available from TV Live, I've made my own mock version by aligning the 'O' in 'One' to the 'C' in 'BBC'.

*

If it's that easy for me to mock up a simple strip logo, why is their a badly done version on pretty much all promo videos on YouTube and the BBC website for the past two or three years?

Look at the number of slightly different logos, belonging to each BBC TV service, spawned over the past 5 years.

There's your answer, nae control.

There's a circa 1997 logo on the live stream for gawd's sake.

Actually, this is the one I see the most of all.

Nowt wrong with it IMHO. It's the correct proportions for the ident version. Can you please furnish us with some other examples rather than your one single cut out picture to demonstrate that it is widespread?

Well, there's the box version of the BBC One logo that makes an appearance quite often on sports slides and websites. The 2001-2007 BBC Two logo also seems to make its way into many recent trailers, BBC Four uses a strip logo as its DOG even though its actual logo is a box, BBC One and Two on the live stream and during Learning Zone use the 1997 logo as a DOG, there's a slightly different font used for the 'One' on the BBC One website, and finally the already mentioned odd strip-style logo used on YouTube/BBC Online videos for shows on BBC One.

With the DOG version of the logo, they need to increase the BBC Logo's size in relation to the "one" to make it legible, but they still want to have the "one" larger than the BBC, so the current DOG is the best compromise between a small DOG, but a legible DOG.

guff guff guff and finally the already mentioned odd strip-style logo used on YouTube/BBC Online videos for shows on BBC One.

Yes yes yes... it is this I want you to furnish us with further examples of rather than your one tiny cut out logo, as I have not seen a straight strip used on the bottom of the screen at all , yet you say it is widespread. Please back up your claim with a Youtube video, or web link, or full-screen grab.

Look at all videos on YouTube/BBC Online that advertise BBC One programmes. They have that logo in the corner: http://www.youtube.com/bbc

Look at the "Life's Too Short" clips as well. They have a correctly sized version of the BBC Two logo in strip-form. Inconsistent at it's best.
