look at what happened with BBC Two in October, albeit they flip-flopped and eventually (in my view, rightly) did a U-turn.

eventually??? it took them three hours.

and why have they not disposed of Subtitles in Scotland and Network? It's so pointless.

Some of the new ident cuts are good, but again some are downright wrong.

Improved Cuts...
Kites (Better Music, Less of the boring shots)
Petals (The story isn't destroyed so much)
Forest (Better Music, Splash of Red improves the green wash)

Deteriorated Cuts...
Capes (the transition from rain to sun IS THE STORY, and that is lost)
Bikes (less of the silly colour shifting and more of the buildup is needed, and innappropriate music)
Hippos (never liked it, now I like it less)

EVIL BAD RUINATION...
Helicopter (The most poignent and atmospheric of the lot, is now a just a helicopter !"!*"£!$ers )

I will try to get hold of some full quality ident footage of the original and short versions and maybe try edit my own cuts...

(if anyone can help supplying these...)

Apologies for my being so doubtful, but where did you pluck that figure from? Are you giving an opinion / estimate? Because you've stated it as if it were fact, yet to the best of my knowledge it is not so. I thought you'd be one of the least likely to mislead people in that way! Laughing

The turn in question was over a BBC Two planned change that wasn't even fully detailed on here in terms of pres scheme, let alone insiders divulging trivialities such as the length of the decision-making process.

I have no exact figure, but based on what actually occurred, I shall say it certainly wasn't three hours. If anything, the final deliberation may well have spanned the course of a day - this given that the revised idents were spotted twice, 'topping and tailing' the schedule respectively, first thing in the morning and last thing at night - after that, I don't think they were ever seen again. The wider plans obviously had been days in the making at least.

If that topic is still available, feel free to check out that discussion leading up to and including the start of October; apart from alleged ident axings, there was generally very little info that came to light.

Very much so, but I don't know why you're stating this following one of my posts again - I've already made my agreement with you clear in the BBC Parliament topic, Page 6 (where I was only referring to Subs flag being used on the graphics over live coverage there, noteworthy because it was outside of typical use over symbols):

With regards to the graphics, I feel as if the 'Subtitles' doesn't need to be there ...

the subtitles dog is redundant across the BBC now they have 100% coverage. At least NI had the sense to ditch it.

Absolutely, it's not a necessity anymore

So it's neither a point of contention nor relevant to the recent discussion here; I'm sure you can appreciate that there's now no need to state this to me in future. Sadly, I'm not the person who decides whether Subtitles flags stay or go; sorry if you thought otherwise!

MDTA, I very much agree with your assessment of the revised symbols. The original Helicopter audio was superb, and as I said previously, invaluable for when gravitas was needed; the best news symbol - so it is without a doubt a greater loss to the set than the others. The fact they overlooked that in the process of re-recording soundtracks means in order to correct it they'd have to re-tweak the set they've just updated, again. I doubt it would have been impossible to reasonably re-edit the original music to the hook point.

The subtitles dog mention is conincidence, that was my first post in this thread after having see the idents in real life.

as for the three hours.

No, that's not all of it I'm afraid. Did you not read my post fully? You've only referred to the Sunroof symbol that got played out at 6am at the start of the day.

As I mentioned already, at the end of that day, another instance of a boxless BBC Two ident - Seascape - played out; just before 1am on the 2nd October. It was right at the end of the night: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forums/post585596#post585596 - so the final instance of the rebadged ident and the complete return to boxed symbols actually took a day longer than you suggested.

PRATS!! Mad

We're all here as we have an interest in telly pres, but sometimes it goes a bit far as above. Do we really need such a hyperbolic insult for a shorter version of a television ident?

Maybe I should have said muppets instead as that is less inflammatory. But seriously it took them two years to work out the hook is better at the start than at the end? Quite a few people here said that from the start and yet nobody realised it at the time. You had the hook at the start of the Rhythm & Movement idents and with the balloon, and yet they decide this time to put it at the end so that it gets drowned out.

Then they give somebody loads of money to come up with a concept and send people out to expensive locations to film them and then ditch most of those bits in the new edits.

Seems very stupid to me and I wish I was talented enough to work in design because if you get the pitch right to a TV boss you can fleece them for cash!

ohhh yes. I forgot about that oddity at closedown. I stand corrected in that instance. Either way, I think it shows the complete shambles that day was. I wonder how much money was poured down that particular drain.

BBC One might as well just use the ident/sting that they use for the 8pm BBC News headlines all the time - seeing they want really short idents:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/BBC_One_2006_logo.jpg

And the longer idents don't work any more, you see the logo appear earlier though the meaning & the build-up to the formation of the circle is now gone - apart from a few idents with new music, the package has simply lost all translation of what it was originally meant to be. I hope that BBC One management decides to use both the old & new versions of the idents.

Yes. The original with the full 'story' was over 35secs, however this long new cut just has the helicopter flying off the screen leaving the rough sea around the lighthouse. Not very visually exciting compared to the older one.

And again - a 30sec Space ident. All the fun stuff at the start of the original now swept away to leave 25secs of the lunar rover trundling around. Disappointing really.

That junction shows why they really should have kept longer edits of the idents, if only alongside the shorter ones.
